I just hear the sickest thing. I was on line at a store and in front of me was this little girl, couldn't have been more than 5 or 6 TOPS. Anyway, she had on this really cute Karate outfit. She turned to her mom and said 'Do I look fat?' 'This outfit makes my stomach big and I look fat'. Her mother told her don't say that you are NOT fat.
Can you believe that a CHILD as young as 5 years old would honestly think she is FAT???? And by the way, she is a tiny little girl.
This society makes me very leary on having children!!

Re: What is happening to our children???
The saddest part about this is that young children are so self aware that these kinds of things can get in the way of them having FUN during childhood. Even if you are a great parent, and you limit the amount of exposure your child has to the media and movies, they are bound to hear negative feedback from other kids at school. It is very upsetting to hear this kind of thing from such a young child!

Re: What is happening to our children???
That's exactly how I feel. I NEVER remember saying..even THINKING anything like that when I was little..it was all about ice cream and candy!!
The unfortunate thing is things will probably never change. I just feel bad that she ALREADY feels this way..imagine when she's 12..it could lead to real problems
I think I may want boys

Re: What is happening to our children???
When I was 5, I don't recall even knowing what 'fat' was, even though my dad is and was overweight. It would never occur to me as a child that it was a good or bad thing. Very sad.

Re: What is happening to our children???
Thats sad. My coworker says she wants her daughter who is 6 to look hot & sexy like she does & buys her belly tops, low rise pants & minis. It's kind of sad. I mean she buys her SEXY stuff

Re: What is happening to our children???
Very sad. At one of my previous jobs, I helped organize a fun-filled day on bring-your-kids-to-work day. I took a few girls to the ladies room, and one of them, was looking at herself in the mirror. She was tall and thin, cute girl. and she was very sad...and she mumbled 'hmmm, i do look fat, my mom was right'....and she was saying to another girl 'my mom is always telling my im getting fat'...and she was truly SAD.
I didnt know whether to find her mom and bonk her over the head or what !

Re: What is happening to our children???
Well I try to express myself with her to a certain point. I do have to work with her so I can't say what I really feel. She even brings pics of her daughter looking 'hot'

Re: What is happening to our children???
Kind of off topic here, but I was in Victoria's Secret the other day, and there were these three girls in there who were maybe ten years old. They were digging through the pile of V Strings looking for extra small, and they kept saying how they really love how they stick out of the top of the jeans. I was like w*t*f?! I mean, maybe I'm naive, but these girls really couldn't have been older than ten, and they were looking for the sexiest underwear they could find. Ick! Why does a ten year old need sexy underwear? I mean, I was still playing with Barbies when I was that age. Maybe it's just me. Sheesh.

Nope, It's not just you. Imagine what these girls will be wearing when they are 18
This is why I'm finally siding with FH and I want boysI don't think I could handle girls..I'll have to lock them up

Re: What is happening to our children???
That is just crazy!!! Being the mother of a 6 year old girl...it truly scares me to think that she will come home one day and ask me the same thing..about looking fat or worse!! It amazes me that kids her age are worried about what to wear or how it looks for that matter...I mean if they want to worry about something it should be what time Sponge Bob is on or what color crayon they should use for a picture...I truly feel that kids are growing up way to quick these days and it's the parents to blame. I couldn't imagine shopping for a belly shirt for my daughter...I mean being trendy is one thing, which is how I usually shop for her,,,but it's flare pants and some clunky shoes...but I do draw the line...I'm sorry for ranting...but this really hit a nerve. I'll stop now...I could go on and on....

I would never want my daughter to grow up, never mind wearing clothes like that at 6!

Re: What is happening to our children???
Betty, in a way, I can totally understand why you'd say you'd want little boys...but, little boys come with their own set of challenges! I am trying to treasure the moments I have right now b/c bigger kids mean bigger problems.
I think it's scary to hear an adult saying that they want their daughter to look 'hot and sexy.' It's as if the parent is trying to make their child into something they felt they never were as a child. It is one thing to allow your child to be 'trendy' as Nanjoe was saying (flare pants and clunky shoes). But, it's a real problem to try to make your innocent child into a sex object. I am appalled! Wanna know what I would say to that parent? Do you also want your daughter to look kidnapped and murdered? That is what happens to little girls who are flaunted as sex objects. Are these parents INSANE? Very sad and very scary!

The girl also says because she dresses like that her daughter sees her doing it so she wants to also. And she buys her the stuff!

Re: What is happening to our children???
That is sad, I hear strange things out of kids mouths also. I have often wondered if it is not just society in general but some sort of breakdown of the family unit? Where would a child of that age get such an idea? School, tv, family? Maybe all of them. A friend of mine just sent her little one to preschool. She decided to do it so her daughter would have more interaction with children her own age. Well, after a few months some foul things started coming out of the child's mouth--curses, references to adult subjects etc.. My friend and her husband never curse and they don't discuss sex in their home. Her only conclusion was that it came from the preschool kids, needless to say she moved her child to another school but, how do you combat such negative influences on your children without basically keeping them locked up in the house 24/7? And kids are so impressionable.
