My condo has just one bathroom, and it is very, very old. The showerhead is leaking, and doesn't have a shut off valve -- so, fixing it is going to involve shutting off water to the whole building, tearing up tile, opening the wall, and replacing the pipes... So, I'm faced with either figuring out someway of trying to patch up the existing ugly tile, or using this as an excuse to update the whole bathroom. So, I'm wondering, what is the approximate cost to redo a whole bathroom? I know that the price would vary significantly depending on the tile I choose, etc but I just have no idea what even the minimum cost would be... have any of you been through this?

UNfortunately, as you said, it really is hard to determine, based on the style of things that you choose. Maybe you can find a local 'handyman' that can give you one set price for everything. We have a guy that has done several jobs for a home my parents own, this way. They ask him what he would charge to do XY and Z and he sets one price for it all, and they buy the tiles, sinks, etc. of their liking.
Im sure if you go to a local Home Depot or even ask around, you can find someone.
good luck!

Hello Valenia! Long time no talk
My MIL just re-did her BR. They removed all of the old (pink) tile, tub, vanity, sink, mirror, etc.
She replaced everything in her small extra BR for around $8,000 including everything (even the new accessories). She used Cancos for tile/tub/sink/toilet (she tiled from floor to ceiling) and Lowes for the new vanity, mirror, fan, and lighting fixtures. The accessories came from Fortunoff.

Re: What is the approximate cost to redo a bathroom?
For our master bathroom (which is just as big, if not bigger than our master bedroom), all the prices we were quoted are around $40,000-$50,000.
(but we're going nuts, huge jacuzzi tub, huge walk in shower that you can fit abot 8 people into..not that we're into that...ha ha, marble floors, marble counters, double sinks, a laundry area that's closed off, makeup area, storage area...it's going to be amazing...but that's going to have to wait until after the wedding. All the walls are ripped down, and we've got all the plumbing in.

For our smaller bathroom (which we use now as our main bathroom upstairs), we did marble floors, marble shower, marble half-way up the walls...new tub, sink, and toilet...I think it was around $10,000 total...but I can't remember.
You're right, the tile you choose will determine how much it's going to cost.

Valenia, I also have a friend, who's a perfectionist, but she watches her budget . She has a GORGEOUS bathroom. It only costed her about $3,000. (but her hubby helped the contractor out alot because he is handy) - do you know someome somewhat handy, that can, lets say, rip out old tiles, and save you on THAT labor? So it really takes planning and picking out NICE but not too pricey stuff to keep your price down. I think you should get a quote for the labor and then judge how much you want to spend on buying parts.

Anna is absolutely right...the cost is cut down even further if you do it yourself, or have family member or friend who knows about this stuff (we can't do home improvements to save our lives!)

One of my friends just re-did her bathroom and I believe it was in the $5,000 range (give or take) but they did not replace the tub.

Like everyone said it varies anywhere from $3000 - $40,000. It depends on what your taste is and are you tiling from top to bottom or just the tub area? Are you using border tile? Are you getting a custom vanity? These are all things that will add/subtract from your cost.
My dad is a contractor and just did the bathroom in our house and I believe it was around $9000 but they went ALL out, I mean ripped it down to the studs and replaced EVERYTHING. If someone other than my dad did the work it would have easily been around $15,000.
In the house FH and I bought we desperately need to redo the bathroom. Dad said we could do it for about $5000 if we didn't go crazy and that is replacing everything.
I recommend Roma Tile on Jericho in Commack. They had a nice selection and on one particular tile I liked they were $3.00 cheaper per sq. ft!!!! Make sure you shop around.
Feel free to FM me with any questions.........

We are using Cancos for our tile too. We are using Consumers for the jacuzzi, vanity and toilet. We are getting the sink top and marble for around the tub from FMI in Valley Stream. The whole thing should run about $12,000. IT add such value to your home that I feel it is worth it.

I just re-did our bathroom for about $1000.00
We did most of the work ourselves. I did venetian plaster on the walls...it covered all the cracks and looks AMAZING!!
It's a lot of work...but soooo worth it when you save all that $$$$

Thanks for all the suggestions, and for giving me a clue what to expect.
