What is the big deal with favors?
Original post by NYCMeghan
OK, so I may be in the minority here but I've only ever received favors at 2 weddings out of the dozens I have attended. Unless its something edible (i.e. wine or candy) isn't it just a waste? I've been looking through favor catalogs and I can't see my guests enjoying half of the things I see listed, plus it seems like such a silly expense. Wouldn't it be better to put that money towards the reception? I've scoured Emily Post on this and no where does she state that favors are required, ore even a sign of good taste. I'm just awfully torn on this - trying to justify the expense on something that will likely end up in the back of a closet or in the trash. Anyone else not doing favors??

We are giving wild flower seeds. Not only do I hate the idea of giving favors that people won't use, I hate the idea of wasting plastic and other materials that are not only going to collect dust, but won't biodegrade as well!! So we love the idea of wildflower seeds. And it's inexpensive too!

We felt the same way about 'dust collectors' so we did Win for Life lottery tickets and everyone got a kick out of it!

I feel like the favors are the one area where you are specifically doing something for the guests. I do feel that most favors can be wasteful. As a result we decided on a donation, it honors our guests presence, and doesn't end up on the trash.

i had picture frames which also doubled as seating cards. When my guest get the thank you with our pic they can put it in it or use it personally. My cousin liked it so much she did the same thing, but different type of frame.

We decided against favors for the same reasons mentioned above. Instead we are doing the donation. I think it will be appreciated more than a candy dish or what not.
