What is the big deal with favors?

What is the big deal with favors?

OK, so I may be in the minority here but I've only ever received favors at 2 weddings out of the dozens I have attended. Unless its something edible (i.e. wine or candy) isn't it just a waste? I've been looking through favor catalogs and I can't see my guests enjoying half of the things I see listed, plus it seems like such a silly expense. Wouldn't it be better to put that money towards the reception? I've scoured Emily Post on this and no where does she state that favors are required, ore even a sign of good taste. I'm just awfully torn on this - trying to justify the expense on something that will likely end up in the back of a closet or in the trash. Anyone else not doing favors??

I know what you mean, that's why I am giving favors that are useful. I am looking for some salt n pepper shakers, etc those type of things. FH and I wanted to make a donation instead of favors, but my Mom flipped! She has to 'impress' everyone, ya know? And she is paying for them.

I agree. I'm still torn about doing favors. I don't see my guests using them. And for the weddings that I have received a favor, I don't remember what it was. There are very few favors I'm considering, if I do one......wine, donation, cd......

i wasn't going to do favors either, but my mom insisted and said she'll pay for them. i can't see spending money on stuff people are, like you said, going to put it in the back of the closet or in the trash.

I agree, some favors are useless. I have not, however, ever been to a wedding where there wasn't one.
The only favors I have ever used are a wine bottle stop (that my mom got at a wedding) and a cd.

I think the best favors are edible. I am doing wine and chocolate.

My hall hands out chocolates in little gold boxes as the guests leave so I bought gold heart stickers to seal the box and there you go - free, delicious favors.

I also like the little picture frames that people use for seating - those are useful.

I'm not doing favors really.. I am doing all sorts of surprises, whether it be entertainment, food, music, all the stuff from the ceremony, that it should be more than enough..

The only thing CLOSE to being a favor.. which in reality to me is more like a prop, are the masks.. other than that.. nada... and they'll all get a beautiful photo thank you card..

I feel the same way...It is a hard call. I was thinking of just putting the place card in a frame. But all the frames are really girly.

Make a donation then, to an organization in honor of your guests. Do not do anything that does not make you happy. Or give a favor that is will be useful to your guest.

I've changed to thinking of doing seeds. along with placecard frames... or make the seeds part of the placecard (foreverandalways.com does this)

I look at a favor as a little token of appriciation from the Bride and Groom for sharing their day. If you feel that the 'traditional' favors are not to your liking, then a donation to your favorite charity would be wonderful!! Most guests go to a wedding and look for that little something. Dont look at the favor as something that people will throw away. There will be some that do, but others that LOVE it!! We did CD's as our favors...at the time it wasnt a very popular gift and it was a HUGE hit. There are literaly THOUSANDS of things that you can give as a favor. You can even incorporate the favor in to the centerpiece. Make a 'break-a-way' centerpiece. This way everyone gets a part of the centerpiece.

Good Luck!

Personally, I don't care for most of the favors I've received so I'm doing a donation. It means a whole lot more to me and it probably will to my guests as well, because most of them will understand why we chose the charities we're donating to. My best friend didn't give out favors either - she tells me Jewish people aren't supposed to, so she broke apart her centerpieces and everyone took home 2 roses. Do what you want to do, and I think most people will throw them away anyway.

favors can be really cheap if you go to a dollar store or something.. the little frames for the placecards can be enough of a favor...Practical stuff is always nice.. salt & pepper shakers, icecream scoop(with candy inside) or one wedding i went to was pizza cutters...

You don't have to do favors, it's just a little Thank You. I've been to weddings (usually more expensive weddings) where there weren't favors given. She had an afterparty instead of favors.

I just hate the idea of wasting money on something cheap that won't likely get used. We're doing a whole weekend of events for our guests, as many of them are OOTers, so I think I'm going to give a donation to a favorite charity and then forego the entire favor thing...glad to hear I'm not the only one not doing favors! Thanks!

I refused to give a dust collector as a wedding favor, but felt it is in good form to give a nice token of the event. So I did Krispy Kreme donuts. I had a ton of out of town guests who had never had them before. I got a lot of people telling me how nice it was to have them the next morning. In fact, my brother started eating his on the dance floor (last dance of the night). I think a small, tasteful, non dust collector is a really nice idea.

i agree completely - which is why FH and i are making a donation to a cancer charity. we both lost grandparents this year to cancer and thought it would be a nice way to subtlely honor their memory.
