I am going to get married in Jan 09. I am not living in the USA, but I will fly in to buy my dress in NYC, since I have to come anyway to organize other wedding stuff.
The dresses in USA are more affordable and more beautiful than in my own country.
The question is: what is the latest if I want to order a dress (and not off the rack) and have enough time to do the alterations?

It really depends on the designer, but i would say give yourself at least 6 months to other the dress. My dress is a Maggie Sottero and it took 10 months to come in. HTH and happy planning!

it really depends on the designers.. Mon Cheri are 4-6 months.
I suggest you find a few dresses you love online and call the locate you were planning on buying from, ask about those special designers.

i'd say atleast 6 months. i have a Jasmine dress and it took about 6 months. u could consider other designers and there is always rush cut service also but thats more $. hth

I conquer with the 6 months. That should cover most designers and most stores recommend that. I also think that when you are having your wedding and where it is delivered plays a role in how soon they try to fulfill the order. And worse comes to worse you can always rush the order and it will be delivered in anywhere between a month and two months (but that costs a lot of extra money).

Depending on the gown, they may not be able to 'rush' it. Gowns take time to be made. My gown took 8 months to come in, and that was way earlier than what I was told it could take.

I would say 4-6 months depending on the designer but since you are from out of town you should do it soon. Give your self sometime with dealing with alterations.

My Maggie came in 4 1/2 months after I ordered it, a full 6 weeks ahead of the scheduled delivery date.
Rule of thumb is usually no later than 8 months prior to the wedding date.

I'd give yourself 7-10 months. That way the dress can come in with enough time to spare, and you can plan for alterations.

I'm in the minority here but I think its much quicker than that.
My gown came in about 10 weeks and it wasn't a rush order. I see no reason to order a dress almost a year ahead of time. I have never heard of a designer turning down a dress order b/c they don't have enough time. They do not make dresses as soon as the order is placed. They make them based on when it is needed, (per the owner of my bridal shop.)

I think 6-8 months is the average. Unless if you're going to a place like David's Bridal, then it could take less than 2 months for a dress to come in.

I've heard of anywhere between $90-200 or charging an extra percentage of the dress. It depends on the store and designer.

Caroline, I'm with you on that. Each manufacturer puts out a calendar of production, so the bridal salons will work with that calendar in placing your order. If you order your gown 1 year in advance, chances are that the actual order won't go in until a few months later, but meanwhile, the bridal shop has your cash deposit.
I'm not saying wait until the last minute, you do want a cushion of time, but realize that unless your dress is custom made, it does not take 1 year to sew.

Thank you so much... I was stressed out after reading all the comments. Caroline and you calmed me down. I could remember somewhere else reading this. Anyway I called two bridal stores... the deliverance time is about 4 months. BIG

I don't think you are the only one. I have read somewhere else that it's no point to order a year ahead. You are not going to get it sooner. Thanks for calming me down! Big
