A nonstress test is when they hook you up to the monitors like they do in labor to check the baby's heart beat and to see if you are contracting. One belt has the contraction monitor on it - so they will watch it for contractions. The other measures the baby's heart rate. The important info from that is the baby's resting heart rate, and the doctor is also looking for accelerations of the heart beat above that baseline. Basically you want to see some accelarations as evidence that the baby is healthy and don't really want to see any decelerations in the heart beat. They often do these tests at the end of pregnancy for women with diabetes or other problems just to check that the baby is okay. They will also do them if you are overdue.
It is totally painless- you just have to sit there pretty still for a half hour.

Re: what is the non-stress test?
I just had my first one done jenny last week. They kept me about 20-30 minutes. I just layed back on this very comfy couch and listened to my sweet pea.

Re: what is the non-stress test?
I was put on a Fetal Monitor a few weeks ago? Is that the same thing? I got a belt hooked up to my belly and had to sit in a nice reclining chair for 20 minutes listening to the heartbeat. I believe I had LOTS of contractions at that point!

Bring a magazine and make sure you are well hydrated! I had over 10 of them so I know about these. I even brought my own pillow evertime. You just sit there and listen to beeps- which is your baby's heartbeat.
