I asked a professional party planner and he said that it was something that was created by photographers for a picture. Nothing symbolic here.

Re: What is the significance of...
i thought it's quite unnecessary.. had to do that once for a friend's wedding and it was quite awkward...
the other bridesmaids and i are not tall so when we raised our hands the bride and groom had to do duck relaly really low to get underneath the tent we formed.
just something to think about if you're tall and have a short bridal party. :P
we did it and it actually was a really cute picture

Beats me. Didn't do it. And I don't think Giorgio's will do it unless you tell them that is what you want.

Well the girls (theoretically the bride's side) joining with the guys (in theory the groom's friends), shows the acceptance and blending of the two groups. The couple walking beneath the arch is symbolic of the couple accepting the benediction of their now combined families.
I am really talking out of my *** at this point.. but it sounds good, right?

Re: What is the significance of...
We didn't do anything. I mean, they announced my parents, MIL and DH's uncle, the BP and Giorgio's lined them up by the dance floor, and then were announced and they told us to do a lap around the perimeter of the dance floor and then we went into our first dance.
In this pic you can see the BP on the left as we are walking in.
