what is the standard gift if you are in the bridal party?

FH is the best man for his best friend. they are getting married 2 months before us and money will definatly be tight because we are saving up for a house. His best friend told us the other night he expects to get $1000 from each of the people in his bridal party. isnt that a bit much considering how much money FH will put into everything else for the wedding? or is this standard?

I've adopted the attitude, give what you can afford...MY FH was in a BP out in California..his friend that got married asked us not to give a gift since it cost over $500 just for FH to fly out there.

Wow, I don't know about you guys, but you just gave me a bit of sticker shock. I certainly don't expect that from anyone in my bridal party. I am delighted to have their presence and the honor of making my day special.

I think that's crazy! I only gave that amount of money to my brother!! We are very close and my only sibling!

First of all - you give what you can afford. I was just a BM for a friend from college and I gave $350. I felt bad that I couldn't give more, but she understood that we all spent alot of $$ on the shower, shower gifts, hair, make up, dresses, bacholerette party. I'm also saving for a wedding and closing on a house. Just think about it - are you expecting a $1,000 for each person in your bridal party? I'm not!

Who EXPECTS a gift of a certain dollar amount anyway? Isn't it gift enough that he's in his BP?

I have heard that you are IN the bridal party you don't have to give a gift because you are shelling all the money to be IN the party! Give what you can afford. Just for that remark I wouldn't go too crazy.

WOW that $1000 would be monopoly money right?

That is absurd - you can't expect anyone to give that - IF someone chooses to give that it is solely their business - NO ONE should EVER expect ANY amount from anyone ESPECIALLY the bridal party - they are already being generous enough with everything they have to spend just to be in your wedding party. That groom with have a serious wake up call at gift time

I think it is rude to ask for a gift...or expect one. I would guess the amount depends on your budget.

Dawn When I read that I screamed out loud WHAT!!!!!!!!! Mike asked me what? I read it to him and he laughed. I dont expect any of my family members to give that kind of money forget about my friends especially my friends in the bridal party. That guy has got to be kidding. Its rude to tell someone this how much I expect (and he basicaly said him since is in the wedding party right)
I agree with Rachel Id give him a candy dish or maybe a dollar and tell him sorry I couldnt afford the rest of the zeros. I would have laughed at him. Give him what you guys can afford.

that is alot. My sister didn't expect anything from me. I ended up getting her and husband a computer w/flat screen monitor. It was kinda a combine gift for being a sister, wedding and there new house.

Asking for a gift though is insane after you have to get them engagement gifts, buying tux and things for the wedding... sheez

Re: what is the standard gift if you are in the bridal party?

Its so expensive just to be in a bridal party that I would be fine if they didn't give a gift. Theres the shower, batchelorette party (if they do that. if not thats ok too, but I know they've been talking already), BM dresses, shoes... and half of my girls are flying in and probably staying in a hotel. $1000 is crazy, and I would feel bad if any of the bridal party gave us that.
