what is wrong with people (re: interviewing candidates)
I've been interviewing applicants to replace me in my position (account manager/event planner for a floral design studio), and I'm finding people are morons!
They don't seem to get the idea that you need to IMPRESS someone when you're applying. Some of the cover letters and resumes are just awful!
Here's a recent sampling of those that have interviewed:
One woman showed wearing fishnets and blue nails, another in skin tight lycra baring her belly (granted this is floral design, but this position interfaces with high level executives and clients) - how unprofessional.
One applicant came 30 minutes late saying 'sorry, I'm a LITTLE late'
One came and left before we even had a chance to talk to her (said she had a scheduling conflict)
Two didn't show at all
A bunch came and just didn't talk. It was like pulling teeth to get them to say something, anything!
UGH - I'm sick of talking to dumb people!

you'll get the right person..
it's funny how on paper someone might look awesome and when they come in -
on the other hand, they might have a so so resume and a great personality, good fit.
Where are you advertising for this position? Maybe place an ad in a trade journal.

I need someone that looks good on paper AND in person. Presenting yourself professionally on paper is a big part of this position (writing up floral proposals for clients).
Out of all the people we've interviewed and all the resumes we received, we have 2 potential people for the position. And a few more interviews set up for tomorrow.
We listed it on craigslist (which is HUGE out here) - thats how I got the job too!

It is funny what you get when you interview people - both resumes and in person. I have incorporated a phone interview before bringing people in because they can be very telling - paper is very deceiving. But even so you can still be fooled. I am amazed how people dress and behave on interviews. I have so many fun stories...
My favorite resumes would be those that included a picture. Now why would you send a picture of yourself for a IT Support position?
Another told me he is really dedicated to IT and if I didn't believe him he would let me speak with his wife - lol!!!
Or I had a woman show up for exec. sec. for the CFO and I work in a business dress environment (business suits) - she wore this loud red skirt outfit, had a iced coffee with her with huge red lipstick stains on the straw, red stocking, lace up booties and was carrying her life with her (three bags). The sad part is she got passed our HR dept (we didn't have a very strong HR dept at the time) to me which wa the second round (computer testing). I could not pass her on.
And since I use to do computer skill testing - I couldn't believe how many people would try and cheat. Bad stuff.

I can't believe these people think they are going to get jobs like that. I work in publishing and even though we are considered a creative field, I would never dare wear anything other than a dark suit for an interview. Maybe add a little flair with a pretty scarf or earrings, but geez people. FISHNETS???
And I remember showing up a little late for a few interviews (when I was learning my way around the city) and I could see the look on their faces and knew I was out the door before I was in, so I learned to leave REALLY early or call from the street and explain that I was lost (most were really sympathetic)
Good luck with finding someone. If I lived out there, the position sounds like a great mix between business and creativity. But alas I am in NY and am stuck here for a while

oh jeez - you cannot IMAGINE what I have seen. The last girl I saw came in on Halloween with HALLOWEEN SOCKS ON THAT LIT UP and were saying HAPPY HALLOWEEN with a witch cackle like every 10 minutes. She couldn't figure out how to make it stop. I mean - it was kind of funny but come on.
I also got somebody who can't speak a WORD of English basically - applying for an answering phones position...
I have seen blue nails MANY times with like rhinestones on the ends hanging off. It's really bad.

I cant believe someone would go on an interview dressed like that!!!! Even in my line of work where as long as you have a pulse and a license, they are dying to hire you, I still wouldnt show up looking like that! But now that you mention it, it does make sense, when I was interviewing for my job, there were people in the waiting room in jeans! I guess nobody ever taught them about professionalism!

Just a story for you, because people nowadays are insane!. My girlfriend's DH was interviewing for a position in his office. He does something technical but in finance, I have no idea what but he really takes his job seriously. This candidate's resume had spelling and gramatical errors on it and something else was wrong with it but I don't remember what. Basically, he knew there was no way he'd hire the guy, but he thought he'd be helpful and point out the mistakes so they could be corrected.
After the interview, the guy had the audacity to email my friend's DH's supervisor to complain and said that he felt he should interview with someone else because he was treated rudely and how dare my friend's DH comment about his resume!
Good luck finding someone!!
