psychiatrist...they prescribe meds for that, to control the behavior. Also, behavorial and cognitive therapists help control the thought processes which help to control the behavior, they can then work with the psychiatrists on the correct 'cocktail'. (I think)

Re: What kind of doctor do you go to if you have
correct me if i'm wrong... but obsessive compulsive disorder... thats OCD right?
I think it would be a therapist... to help you overcome your fear of what something would happen if for example you didn't step in and out of your house 10 times before leaving... or whatever the case may be.
I could be wrong.

A therapsit/psychiatrist combination. Depending on how dsevere the OCD case is they will give you meds.

you are correct. a psychiatrist can prescribe the medication for you however a psychologist cannot. but i say go to the psychiatrist to get the meds and then actually speak and have sessions with a psychologist because they have more training in counseling and being able to help treat the thought process which will control the compulsion therefore controling the obsession to do the compulsion!!!

you dont necessarily need medication. if you see a psychologist you will definitely be able to work on the compulsion of doing a repetitive action. and the psychologist will also be able to help reduce the obsession you have to do that action. the obsession would be the feelings as to why you need to complete that action several times etc.
so def see a psychologist first and then they will be able to refer oyu to a pychiatrist if need be!

A cognitive psychologist/therapist will help you work on the thought processes that are behind the compulsions/behavior. They may determine that it's not OCD and just anxiety. Still, they will work with you on 'calming down' so to speak. They may just have a psychiatrist prescribe xanax for you to take in the cases when you start to feel overwhelmed, not to take regularly.

haha yeah it kills me though because i am always analyzing things!! and every time we focused on a new disorder such as OCD etc I always thought I had it hahaha.
but true like denise said not everyone who thinks they have it actually do. i am very anal abolut things and do get mad when they are changed or moved etc. but i know i wont become so obsessed with doing it a certain way that it obstructs my life. But if you need the comfort of an evaluation i say definitely go for it. it will make you feel better!!
oh plus sometimes you can answer it yourself: does the compulsion and the obsession effect your everyday life and activities. because most often than not if it doesnt effect your daily life and activities then you might only have a slight case of it or not at all you might just be a very anal person or have high anxiety.
but good luck lisa!!!!

Definitely make an appointment then. They can help you with anxiety too.
