What seems to be the average wedding gift for a friend/acquaintance?
Original post by Shorty McBride
I did a search, and the general concensus is to give what you can afford.
To the married ladies: what was the AVERAGE monetary gift received from friends? (not best friends)
I've NEVER been to a friends wedding, so I'm really not sure!
TIA

I give $200 to everyone unless their wedding costs me a fortune to attend (like getting a flight and hotel, etc.) then I'll give $150 (also considering it's out of state it definitely doesn't cost as much to cover your head when you go to the boonies)
ahh yes have to agree on that too. We have had to spend money to stay overnight at hotels as well, so we factor that in too if the cost is higher.
wow, i never took that into consideration-- oops. we spent 150 dollars to stay at the hotel in PA, not to mention FH took time off from work-- we drove there, tolls, etc. hmmm didn't think about that!
we do now, because we're saving money for the wedding and a house. The last wedding hotel cost over 150 to stay at so we did take that into consideration, plus we've had 5 weddings(and one more in a few months where FH is a GM again in the past 18 months and FH was a groomsmen for one so there was additional costs, plus showers, engagement parties, bachelor party, tux, etc. it adds up.
ETa: sorry meant 5 weddings and one more this September and I'm not saying I would subtract money from the gift, but I might not be able to give extra
yeah totally understandle-- i just never thought about that until you guys mentioned it-- GEEZ it does add up!!! wow, you and your FH have your hands full with weddings!!!

I try not to let the hotel, tolls, day off from work, ect effect the gift we pay. I usually give $250 for friends just cause I like to give a tiny bit higher then the average... when in doubt- give more (if you can afford to).
Yeah I agree. I had meant I won't let stuff like that subtract money from the gift I give, I just might not be able to give a little extra.
right exactly, me too-- i just never added it all up before to realize how much in total it was costing.

Re: What seems to be the average wedding gift for a friend/acquaintance?
THis is all for a couple
For family I give between $250 and $300 For friends nearby or in cities (NY or Boston) I give $250
For others we decide where it is.
Virginia- I was in the wedding party. I gave 150, because of the hotel and flight and shower I gave.
Rochester- I gave 150. My friends said the standard up there is 50 per person. They are comiing to our wedding so I figured it will be an even swap
Utah- Hippie wedding. My fiance went by himself and was in the wedding, on a thurday afternoon in a public park. He gave zero- because of the flight and hotel and because the groom said it was too expensive for him to come to NY for ours. They mutually decided against gifts.
Georgio's on a Sunday afternoon for a hs friend. $200
A few years ago my FI was in the Peace Corps and we didn't have $ so we didn't give a gift. Then when our friends bought a house, we gave them a home depot gift card for 300, and another couple a framed picture of the hamptons where they met.
It doens't really matter because you'll get back what you give with your friends.

250-300 is usually my standard (for 2 people)
If I am in the BP - then it goes up.

Ok, well, what if you are in a friends wedding, where you have seen online how much a head it is. I am travelling from NY to MA twice because of the wedding and shower up in MA, I have all the costs that go along with the wedding.
Her wedding is only costing her around $75 per head, whereas mine in a couple of months is more than that.
Considering I'm in the wedding and have all those costs of travel, and hotel, is it ok if I just give her what it costs to cover the plate?
I think it can be safe to say, that she won't be covering her plate at my wedding bc of what I give her. She is not in my wedding. But I doubt she'll realize that I had all those other costs too. Very frustrating!

To friends as a couple I would give at least $300.00, for family and close friends more.

If it's a close friend or a relative we give anywhere between $350-$400 and if they are an acquaintance we usually give $250-$300

This is scary, I can't afford to give someone $300 and I am definitely not expecting my friends to give me $300.

$200.00 would be the amount I'd give for myself and a guest. If I go alone it's $100.00.

Some friends gave us 200 some 100 some 150 so it definitely varies
The general rule is try to cover the cost of your plate...that is JMHO

We usually give $300 a couple to any wedding we attend and if it's a family member or close friend then we give more.
yes, that is our rule of thumb. i feel you cant go to a wedding with less than that.
For a family member or close friend we may give up to 500

Re: What seems to be the average wedding gift for a friend/acquaintance?
its funny how different the amount is for different areas.... for our weddnig, DHs family is all from out in western PA where weddings cost about $25 a person or something... we went to his cousins wedding there and gave $100, and they about fainted when they opened the card ( they had people back to their house after the reception to open cards ). for our wedding, his family from PA gave us average $50 per couple, while our friends and family from jersey gave us an average of about $150-300 a couple... so we FAR from 'broke even' on the costs, but we didnt' care. we planned a wedding we could afford, and the gifts were all just something extra....

Ummm...I hate to thikn that people think that if you dont cover your costs that I wish you hadn't RVPD'd yes...Do people really RSVP no becaues they can't give $300? That seems to be the most crazy thing ever.
I really do not care how much people give me, I am inviting people because I want them to be with me on my special day, not because of how much they could/would give me.
Who cares how much a wedding costs in relation to gifts? This just seems crazy. Yes they are expensive, but still...
