What should I get for....

one of my TA's that just got engaged today??? Do you think if I wrap up some destination wedding magazines that would be cute (she wants to get married by the beach since she was born in another country). Do you think this is tacky???

ETA: Sorry girls... I should have explained better... I am going to get her a real engagement present later on (she is having an engagement party) but I just wanted something cute to give her in the meantime.

Re: What should I get for....

see, i kind of disagree.

i think the magazine is really very thoughtful. you may want to amplify with a wedding planner binder or something, but i don't think it's tacky.

just the fact that you're thinking of her and rushed into action to pick up something is very thoughtful and would probably be much appreciated.

my MOH showed up at my house the very next day with 2 magazines and a planning binder, and FH and i were so touched by her thoughtfulness!

i'm not a knick-knack kind of girl, so a candy dish (for me) would prob sit in its little blue box for a while :( that plus, i'm sure that if you're invited to an engagement party, you'd bring another gift.

If you get the magazines, I would get them in addition to, a gift. They have so many nice wedding planners at Barnes and Noble. Although, I hardly ever use it, as LIW is my main resource when I have a question regarding wedding planning. :)

ITA.. im sure she isn't expecting anything from you...so just gathering up magazines is showing her the thought is there and that you're thinking of her and happy for her.. i for one would be touched by this!

I don't think getting magazines is tacky. It is very thoughtful, and it doesn't seem like she is your BFF so it's a nice thing to give to one of your co-workers who isn't expecting a gift from you. I wish someone bought me magazines, I really love them!

Maybe you can get her one of those nice planning binders? Those are so cute and helpful!

I think the mags are nice. . it's not like you are going to an engagement party and need a gift. . I think it's a cute gesture. .

I mean honestly I didn't get a single engagement gift from anyone and didn't expect them so if anyone had given me something I would have thought it was sweet. .. and those mags ARENT CHEAP.

Nobody at work gave me any gifts when I got engaged. I'd have been touched, though, if someone gave me some magazines or planning guides. I think it's a nice gesture.

I think its a very thoughtful idea! I would have def appreciated the mags!!! Maybe you can give her a nice journal. I was given the advice to write my planning process in a journal because this is the fun part of the wedding and the day goes by sooo quickly. It's a nice way for her to have all the memories down on paper that way she can look back on them and her children can look back on it too.

Re: What should I get for....

My BFF @ work just got engaged and I bought her a couple of bridal magazines and a wedding organizer. She was more excited for the magazines b/c she could look through them and get ideas for dresses. I agree that you should def give her some mags, but maybe a little something else as well.

ITA. When we got engaged, a couple of family members sent us money and one friend sent over a magazine, but we didn't get any sorts of big elaborate gifts or anything. I don't think people expect them upon engagement or anything like that. Between the engagement party, bridal shower, bachelorette party, wedding, etc etc etc etc you'll have plenty of opportunities to get her a gift!

i think it's a really thoughtful thing to do for her. i have a friend who used to be my best friend but we had a huge falling out until recently we have been mending our relationship and last week she gave me a cute little card with the book Chicken Soup for the Bride's Soul and a bridal magazine with a a budget section because she knows we're definitely on a budget. I was soo shocked and cried because I didn't expect anything like that from her. I think she would deinitely appreciate it and like someone else said I like the magazine because it gave me a million more ideas.

Re: What should I get for....

I think thats a really cute idea!! When we got engaged I would have LOVED to recieve a basket like that...magazines and a wedding planner would be perfect. If you still feel like it's not enough, maybe throw in a nice bottle of wine or something (Who doesnt like to have a nice glass of wine when they skim through the pages of a wedding magazine??!!)

Re: What should I get for....

I agree with Barb, sort of. I think if she is just a co-worker (your TA, right?), then magazines or a planning book is really cute. If she is a friend outside of work, you may want more.

One of my aunts did this for me right after I got engaged, and I thought it was really sweet. I knew it wasn't an 'engagement present,' but just the idea was very cute!
