We are trying to go today but do we need both our Birth certificates, I looked on the website and it said a Drivers License or passport. Is that all I need and my money? Do they accept cash or does it have to be a money order?
TIA

Re: What to bring to get the marriage license?
I don't know if it's different from town to town, but FH and I went with our passports and licenses and they said we needed our birth certificates. We had to go and get them and come back to get our marriage license.
ETS- they accept cash, that's how we paid.

Re: What to bring to get the marriage license?
Thanks...Guess we'll be going another day since I only have a copy of FH's birth certificate and the office closes at 4pm. I thought it was at 5pm. FH has to try and get out of work early one day to be able to go.

Re: What to bring to get the marriage license?
You need to call and check - my office only needed 1 piece of ID (Queens) but other places need 2 and some need Birth Certificates, some don't.

Re: What to bring to get the marriage license?
I just went on Monday to the town of Hempstead. All I needed was both our birth certificates and drivers license and $40. They did not accept cash, we wrote a check. There was no wait either, in and out in 15 minutes.

okay i just flipped reading this bc FH and I plan to go tomorrow and I have no idea where my birth certificate is.
I called and in Manhattan you just need passport - not birth certificate (although thats good too).

Re: What to bring to get the marriage license?
I looked it up on the NY State website and it says this:
A person is required to establish proof of age and identity by submitting to the issuing clerk:
One of the following age related documents:
Birth Certificate Baptismal record Naturalization record Census record
And one of the following identity related documents:
Driver's license Passport Employment picture ID Immigration record
I am not sure if this is consistently followed in every area, but I brought the two categories with me. It also says the fees outside of NYC are $25, but I live in the Town of Hempstead and it was $40 there. They took a check and said they would also take cash, but I would call ahead and ask (especially since someone earlier said that Hempstead would not take their cash.....)

Re: What to bring to get the marriage license?
i believe it varies from place to place as the office in downtown manhattan ONLY accepted money orders.
to play it safe, FH and i went with:
birth certificate passport drivers license money order

Re: What to bring to get the marriage license?
i was told they raised the fee everywhere a year ago to $40 and they only took cash all the places I called, including Town of Smithtown. no money orders or checks--just the green stuff! it's not as compliated as you would think - @ least not when we went-it took all of 10 minutes, if that. It took us longer to get there!
