What to do about Mr. & Mrs. Hisfirst Hislast checks?
We've gotten a few checks like this already - Mr. and Mrs. Hisfirst Hislast. It's annoying as all hell because I can't cash them. The bank even gave HIM s**t about it. BUt Mrs. Hisfirst Hislast DOESN'T EXIST and WILL NOT EXIST after the wedding, as I am hypenating. We got the checks deposited still, but how are you guys dealing with this?
And for newlyweds - do you just sign Mrs. Hisfirst Hislast?

good question! i would love to know everyone's thoughts.
that's why i always write the check out to the groom only- his name's staying the same and then only one person has to sign!

if you need to cash them and he can't, then just have him sign it, then you sign underneath with your current name...he should just sign them over to you,

The problem has been that they ask for the signature of both of us, but my name isn't 'Mrs. Hisfirst Hislast,' and even after the wedding it won't be, so he almost couldn't cash them!

I've never heard of that being a problem. You should be able to deposit them with your current signatures.

That's funny cause before the wedding we had a few & I just made him sign and it was no problem.
After the wedding when we were depositing the fifty some odd checks, the lady at the bank gave us a hassle (after he signed them all & I was tallying on the printing calc in a conf room) - that I had to sign them too. Which was fine cause I was now Mrs Hislastname but the account we were depositing into was a joint with me as the primary under Wendy Mylastname!!
Anyway, she still made me sign all of them as Wendy Hislastname. It was really annoying since nothing matched anyway after that, so why did she make me, ya know?

I am not looking forward to dealing with this. After being engaged for two years, we still haven't gotten around to opening a joint account, so I've just been holding onto all of the money. We just got a check made out to 'Mr. and Mrs. Hisfirstname Hislastname.' While it was exciting to get, when we open our account it isn't going to say that right away...not until after the wedding. Im hoping the bank doesn't give us a huge hassle...

I don’t know if this helps.. but we have a joint account. He can deposit my checks and I can deposit his. I just sign the back with my name no Mrs, just MyName HisLast. Never had an issue with this.
But I’ve NEVER written a check to Mr. & Mrs. John Doe. It makes no sense. I’ve seen Jane or John Doe, but not Mr. & Mrs. Odd.
Good Luck

Can't you just stamp 'For deposit Only' on it? You don't even have to sign it if you do that. They just have to clear before you can use the money. I do that now.

Re: What to do about Mr. & Mrs. Hisfirst Hislast checks?
We both hyphenated our names - but when we went to deposit the checks we had not changed the name on the account or our licenses or anything yet and we had checks written out to all different things - Mr & Mrs S HisLastName, Mr S HisLastName, S. HisLastName & P. HerLastName, someone even wrote it out to Mr & Mrs. S. HisMiddleName (guess they got confused because the invite listed his middle name and it's not common ). When we went to deposit it - we deposited it into my account - we asked what we should do, esp about the ones where it did not have any of my names (the account was still in my maiden name as we hadn't changed it yet.) Anyway, the bank lady told us to just put the account # on it and that was it - no signature AT ALL which struck me as odd why they would actually deposit a check that said to Mr. & Mrs. S. HisLastName into an account that was listed as P. HerLastName. But, it did work. But later, when I went to deposit ONE check into it - with him standing right there - that was written out to Mr&Mrs HisLastName-HerLastName - they wouldn't do it without his name being on the account or, I had to have it 'approved' by the bank manager. Such a PITA - I finally added his name to the account just to make it simple.

I'm glad I've given cash at all the weddings I've been to.

Re: What to do about Mr. & Mrs. Hisfirst Hislast checks?
I never know what to write when I give cheks. For one couple I thguht she was keeping her name so I wrote it to his first & last & her first & maiden, and then when I got it back it was signed, by him & both of her names. I don't know if the bank requires it, or she jsut was covering all her bases.
We dont' have a joint account yet. We were waiting till after the wedding. I'm sure I'll get Mr & Mrs checks even though i may be keeping my name, unless I make a stink about it for the next 4 months.
Can you just sign with his last name, even though that's not your official last name. The bank just might need it to match, even if it doesn't exist.
Is anyone here a teller or bank manager? There are a lot of us here? Anyone?

I am dealing with this right now - what a pain!! I have an account that we are going to make joint and the bank said that since the joint account is under my current (maiden name) - we will have to sign the checks three ways - he signs it, I sign it with my current (maiden name) and then I have to sign it with my married name - even though that doesn't exist yet!! What a pain!!

OMG, I'm so horrified by this thread! This problem never even occurred to me!
So if we get a joint account with my last name (which I'm keeping) and his last name, we should be able to deposit the Mr&MrsHislastname checks?

Re: What to do about Mr. & Mrs. Hisfirst Hislast checks?
When my brother got married a few of his inlaws (crazy people) made checks out using my brothers first name and his wife's maiden name. A name that totally didn't exist.
Luckily most people made it out to Mr and Mrs John Smith and since my brother is a Junior my parents just deposited the checks into their account and then gave them the $.

I've got one even better for you . . . A coworker of mine (for many reasons will not be invited to the wedding . . .LONG story) gave us a check for our engagement party. She wrote the check out to My first name and his first name NO LAST NAME . . . it was interesting to me since I never knew someone to do this . . . The bank was less than pleased, but the ended up depositing it.
