So my reception starts at 1:00 and ends at 5:30, but somebody told me that people might feel like doing somethingelse afterwards, especially if they are coming from out of town. Any ideas?
I think a nap might be a good idea for me, lol.

Re: what to do after the wedding?
I would just have everyone hang out at the hotel bar if that is an option. Then you don't have to worry about any more out of pocket expenses!

I went to a wedding that ended at 6 and we all went back to the hotel and changed and then met at the hotel bar around 7. The bride and groom joined everyone around 8. It was a lot of fun.

I agree with the posts above. People can hang out at the hotel bar, or another nearby bar. Another option would be to rent a party bus and maybe hit up town with a few good bars - maybe stop in Port Jefferson, Bay Shore, Babylon, Huntington or another town with a few good bars. If it's not in your budget maybe you could suggest it to your friends and they'll all go in on it. I could see my friends pulling together some $$$ to get a limo or bus for a night out on the town.

We are going to 'our' bar, the place we met, and continuing the party there.

FH & I just went to a wedding this past month that ended at 6pm also and we went back to the hotel with a bunch of people and hung out at the hotel bar until about 10pm with the bride and groom. We had a great time!

I see your a Lands End bride...what about jumping on the ferry and heading to Fire Island? The ferry landing is right there. Or what about directing everyone to an after party of some sort at Riverview or one of the fun places in Patchogue? As for you, I'm like you...a nap sounds good!

A bar or check if the hotel your using has a party room/meeting that you can use to hang out & bring your own drinks & food.

I have te same scenario. I am not worrying about it. My hotel has a bar so OTT can do what they please.
Not sure what we will be up to doing after the wedding....getting up early and it will be a long day!

Re: what to do after the wedding?
my FMIL is throwing an after party at her house, which is going to be a ton of fun. But, I have been to weddings where they went back to the hotel bar and that was a good time also.
