Despit my wedding being 10 months away, and despite me and FH telling our families to not get us anything until we register for the things we need, people are still mailing us presents that we really don't want and would never register for.
Q - if we get a gift receipt with the present, do you think it is ok to return it?
Q - what should we do with presents we don't get gift receipts for?
These presents are all very nice and obviously expensive, but they are the sorts of things that I know will just sit in a box the next time we move.

Re: what to do with non-registry presents?
we had the same situation. we just tried to look at it in a positive way and find some way to use the gift if there was no receipt. if there IS a gift receipt, i definitely don't think there is anything wrong with returning it.

Return them all. Find out the ones with out GR and return them to the store. I got some stuff too I wont use. Some I found where it was from and returned and some stuff I gave away that I couldnt return.

definetely return the ones with a receipt. If they didn't want you to return the gift then they shouldnt have left a receipt. the other stuff you can still try to find out which stores carry them and see if you can exchange them for something else and get store credit if the price is right.

Anything with or without a gift receipt can be returned to any store that carries that item. Fortunoff , BBB and Macy's I'm sure will carry any of the items you received. You will get store credit and can then purchase stuff that you will use.

I have either given stuff away to friends who need it or I'm going to sell it on ebay. I received 3 different sets of toasting flutes....I'll never use 2 out of the 3.

We gave a few things to our sisters, if they were usable or if we thought they would like them...
We donated some to a local thrift shop that benefits the American Cancer Society.
We only returned one item.
I actually liked a lot of the surprises, but we just have no storage space at all.

ITA. That's what gift receipts are for. If they ask about it later, tell them you already had one or it didn't match your decor but you appreciated their thoughtfullness.
If you don't have a receipt, make sure you take it out of the box, check for tell tale signs of it intended for you then save it for regifting. Tacky, I know but . . .

I received a few things at my shower that I didn't want or need. I went to BBB and returned them. As long as they carry the item in the store they will take it back without a receipt. Then buy the stuff you really want!!!

Re: what to do with non-registry presents?
we registered early and still received a few non-registry gifts. we kept most of them, but returned a few (mainly if they were things we already had)
Luckily, most of the non-registry gifts were really nice! (a beautiful crystal bowl from tiffanys , an artsy glass platter from bloomingdales that was sent with a gift receipt but which we kept and have used multiple times already, pizza-slice shaped tupperware and plates )
the other non-registry gifts were from BBB, so we just returned them there for store credit. only one thing was not returnable anywhere and pretty much worthless to resell, so we used it as a water dish for our cats.

Re: what to do with non-registry presents?
I had a few people give us gifts that 1- we didn't register for or 2- didn't really need or want.
If it came with a receipt we did return it- if it didn't we are going to hold it and recycle it for a holiday gift for someone that didn't buy that particular gift for us.
I would hate to just not use something and if I think someone else can use it then why not regift it?

one if you get it with a rec. it is fine to return it, we returned plenty, secon if it does not have a rec. & you have no use for it, or in my it's just ugly, google it & find a store & return it, after my e-party i got 3 or 4 things i did not reg. for none the less want & fortunoffs had it all, no rec. & tokk it back & gave me a huge credit.

Just make sure you don't give it to someone that knows the people that gave it to you! All you need is for the couple to see it at the other person's house!
