What to Use for Skin Injury? Question for Sister

Hey, I wanted to see if anyone had any advice for my sister on here. She got hit by a car last week. She got a deep gash on her forehead that had to get stitches and she hurt something in her knee. She can't really walk right now on her own, but it could have been worse, and she might not have to get knee surgery after all which would be really good.

I wanted to know if anyone knew what she could put on her gash? She's worried she's going to have a horrible scar on her forehead and is already worrying about if she'll have to wear bangs. Does anyone know what she can put on her gash to make the scarring very minimal? I don't know when she'll be able to see a derm as she needs to see doctors for other things right now. I thought maybe Bacitracin, Neosporin, Vaseline? Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks.

vitamin e oil and/or mederma. both can be picked up at a drug store.

I hope your sister has a very speedy recovery.

When she got it done at the hospital, she asked if she could put vitamin E on it, and they said no, but they were not the best doctors. They didn't know her knee was bad until they realized she couldn't walk.

Is it okay for her to put it on over stitches? I don't think it's the kind of stitches that are removed, but that dissolve on its own.

if the stitches do dissolve on their own, then the vitamin e or any dressing may not be the best way to go - it may aid in the dissolving.

Is she still in the hospital, where she can ask for a dermatology consult??

No she's home now, she just can't move around on her own. Maybe she'll look into trying to see a derm next week then.

I would tell her to talk to her regular doctor. It is important for wounds to breathe, especially deep ones, so that may be the reason the doctors advised no vitamin E or anything.

When I got stitches, they actually recommended putting Neosporin on it. I used a new one that relieved pain as well and it worked great. I don't even have a scar.

Was it stitches that dissolved or that had to get removed?

hmm... I didn't read that part of your post. They were stitches that had to be removed, so I'm really not sure if you should put neosporin on dissolving ones...

I think it might be best to wait till they're gone. But I'll tell her to ask when she sees her regular doctor.

When I had surgery, I didn't want a big funky scar either - a plastic surgeon told me to use triple antibiotic ointment until the wound healed, then use Mederma (if you have $$$ to spend) or Vitamin E oil (I bought it at walmart for $2) when the wound was closed. It's now 1.5 post-surgery, and I have absolutly NO raised scar...no redness, just a little remnant of a white line, but that will fade with time. Good Luck to her!!!

And so sorry to hear about her accident- I'm glad she is OK!
