What was your method for saving up for the big day?

What was your method for saving up for the big day?

How far out did you start saving? Did you and FH say 'we'll each put this amount in each week/each month'?

Or did you have a stash saved up?

Get an extra job?

etc.

We've always saved a certain percentage of our salary and, once we got engaged, we hiked up the percentage. In order to do that, I significantly reduced the amount of shopping I did (like, *significantly* lol) and we stopped eating out. It was pretty easy once we got into the swing of things, although it did make us a bit more antisocial considering we went out less for happy hours and nights out with friends and stuff.

Right after we got engaged, we took a look at all of our finances and see what we spent our money on every month. We cut out what we could and came up with a amount that we could each contribute. We then created a budget and are sticking to it.

Both myself and FH are EXTREMELY frugal to start with, and we have disproportionately large savings given the amount we earn. Even with that being said, FH spends a lot more than I do on clothes, lunch at work, etc. Since we've been engaged, we cut down on going out to eat expenses a lot. We used to go out at least once a week, sometimes twice...now I would say we go to a restaurant maybe every two weeks, and eat a lot more home cooked meals, whether we mooch off his parents or cook something simple (we both live at home still). He's also bringing lunch to work 2 or 3 times a week, which is still less than I would like, but better than before when he would eat out every day.

We started saving as soon as we got engaged but then I got laid off so we used our savings and started from scratch. We put $37 a day away in savings thats all the money we stopped spending daily from cigs, eating out, etc. and whatever money we can stick aside we do. We also have tried trimming our guestlist and doing alot of DIY items to cost costs.

I just stopped shopping for unnecessary things, stopped buying lunch, stopped going out as frequently, and got started another savings account specifically for wedding things.

We were saving to have the kitchen ripped out & done over. So now we put all that $$$$ into the wedding. The kitchen is fine the way it is for now......we were going for an up grade. I'll just have to wait for my new stove, the brat that I am.

FH worked 2 full time jobs for about 1 year. We banked one of his entire salaries. I also saved money and didn't shop for ANYTHING!! I need new clothes badly!! haha!!

We managed to get what we needed. Such a GREAT acomplishment!!! We worked our assses off though!!!

Cut down a LOT on concerts. We'd go to a lot of them...and I'd go to even more than him...with the exception of two Pearl Jam shows in a couple of weeks, we haven't been to any shows since we've gotten engaged. It's certainly helped.

Also cutting down on spending $$$ on clothes.

Less bar-hopping, more nights in with a nice bottle of wine. Well, maybe not a NICE bottle, but who needs to know I spent $10 on it?! Hee hee.

Lots of rental-movie date nights in. My cousin gave me a card that she won for 20-something free rentals at Blockbuster because she has Netflix.

I work in the theatre industry too so we gets lots of free tickets to Broadway shows. It keeps us entertained for freeeeee

Fh started paying more of the rent so I could put double in saving each month 200 $ a month

and I usually give my dad 200 a month for phone and car insurance, but he told me a few months ago to give it to him, but he will hold it for me for wedding payments

so thats about 400 a month i have been saving since the 6 month point to make the final payments

All vendor deposits were covered with money we got from our engagement party. I am covering the vendors and RH dinner with my tax return and bonus from last year. Thankfully, I really didnt have to save anything from my salary. FH is covering honeymoon...and will have to start setting aside money shortly

It was mostly our savings combined, DH's parents and brother loan us some and pool it together. I would suggest doing cut backs b/c every bit really helps. For ex. if you go out to eat or you buy food/grab coffee on the way to work. Start bringing food to work, skip the coffee runs and bring your own thermos/mug to work, instead of eating out, cook and stay in and rent a movie. I realized that after the wedding, I could had a lot more money for our wedding expenses if I cut back buying lunch and Starbucks. Lunch comes out to approx. $64+ (depending if I grab bkfast) a month- Starbucks and approx. $80 a month for lunch. That comes out to $768 (coffee) and $980 (lunch), a total of $1,728!! May not seem like a lot now but that could go towards the wedding expenses for venue, florist or photographer and so forth. Definitely make cut-backs and save as much as you can.

FH and I recently bought a house, so in order to save, we decided that FH would pay all (and I mean all) of our bills (his, mine, and ours)and my entire paycheck goes straight into the bank for our wedding fund. Since our wedding is costing us an arm an a leg, it was really the only way we would be able to save enough..

And since this method is going so well for us, we decided we will continue on w it even after the wedding so we know that we always have money in savings...

we put a majority of our tax returns in our wedding fund, and then every week we each put in 20 bucks. Then every so often we'd put extra money we had into our fund. we started saving as soon as we got engaged, so about a year and a half before the wedding.

We are getting the hall paid for by my parents and the rehearsal by FH's.

We saved up a few bucks... but our roof just went, so we needed to spend it.

We are putting monthly payments to everything. :)

we both had some savings plus have weekly paychecks rolling in...we do monthly payments and keep track of it.

for a year DH and I put $250 into an seperate account every two weeks. I put in all my overtime money, which was a fair amount, and any extra money I had we put in. With the $250 alone in a year we had $12,000 to pay for things.

We cut back on spending but not significantly. It worked out. We paid for our wedding in full.
