what will you call your in-laws after you are married?
Original post by Brideoct05
I have been talking to several friend who recently were married and they continue to call their inlaws Mr. & Mrs. I think that is very formal. What do you think?

I'm probably still gonna call them by their 1st names. Like someone has already mentioned: I already have a mom lol...FH I think might call them mom and dad LoL cuz he always jokes and says that to my mom already

Re: what will you call your in-laws after you are married?
A few years ago when I first met FMIL (they live in Florida), we had already been dating for a year or so - - and she said I should call her whatever I want to (Mom, Vicki, Mrs. F...whatever I'm comfortable with). I told her that since we weren't engaged yet, I'd call her Mrs. But now, 3 years later, I got away from the Mrs. thing and was sick of not calling them anything and hoping they looked my way....so over Christmas, I broached the subject with her again. Now we each call the other's parents Mom and Dad (and I spoke with my mom before calling anyone else Mom and asked her 'permission' - which she was fine with). Still have difficulty calling FFIL Dad, but that's because he isn't a good communicator, so I don't know how he would feel about it. I guess time will tell...

My MIL insists that I call her 'Mom' I dont feel comfortable doing that. I have a Mom already. I tried saying 'Mrs...' and then she makes me say 'mom mom mom over and over again. Its annoying. I think you should call them what ever you feel comfortable with. At this point, I dont call them anything, I just start talking and hope they look at me LOL
I agree, I'm not calling anyone but my mother mom. She passed away three years ago so I don't think anyone else should get that honor.

I call them by their first names if I have no choice, but usually try not to call them anything!
I hate the idea of calling them Mom & Dad...they are not my parents and something about it just seems wrong to me....
I feel to each her own though, and do what works for you. I am not against calling in-laws Mom and Dad for other people, but I just don't feel right doing it....

Its funny because his mother has been wanting me to call her 'mom' for so long and I cant seem to get it out. I started a nickname for her considering her name is Janice and last name starting with a 'B' so I call her JB. She likes it and still would like me to call her mom. Im not comfortable doing that. His father from day one has been Mr. B..i think I am leaving it at that.

I am so glad I just read this-I don't call them anything either. I call his stepmother and his stepfather by their first names since everyone else does-but i can't bring myself to call them much of anything-I thought I was the only one. I will not call my FMIL mom EVER just not going to happen-I already have the best mom & dad in the world and I can't imagine calling other people that EVER!! I guess it will be nothing and like someone else said I'll hope they look in my direction when I need to talk to them-I'm terrible!!!!!

i live with my fh and his mother(father is passed away). i have lived with them for 2 1/2 years. i know that she likes me and she wants me to call her mom but it is so weird and she gets so mad when i dont call her that. for me i know mom as my mother and its kind of uncomfortable...well not really...just odd. i guess it is something that you just have to get used to...

I'll probably just use their first names, I basically do now (when I use their name).
They don't want to be called Mr./Mrs. because they don't want to be called their 'parents'

I think it is just so hard to go from Mr/Mrs. to mom/dad. I am glad to see it is not just me having a hard time.

Re: what will you call your in-laws after you are married?
FH and I just had this discussion yesterday. He was saying he doesn't know what to call them now, he feels uncomortable calling my parents by their first names. I don't really have much of an issue myself because FIL's live upstate and we only see them a few times a year. For now I think I will say first names. I would feel weird calling them 'mom and dad' because I already have a mom and dad. But I don't want anyone to be offended. You know, there was an 'Everybody Loves raymond' episode about this..
