What would you do?

What would you do?

So my aunt got FH and I a beautiful Shannon Irish crystal ice bucket for Christmas. It's huge, weighs a ton and couldn't have been cheap. As soon as I got home, I noticed a big scratch all the way down the inside length of the bucket. Funny thing is it didn't come in an original box. She wrapped it up in tissue paper and put it in a gift bag.

Now what do I do? I think she may have gotten it at an outlet and she didn't notice the scratch.

Do I call her and tell her?

Do I not say anything?

I know if it was me I'd want the person to call me and I'd take it back. It was not on my registry.

TIA

I think you should tell her.

Explain to her that its cracked, and you would like to exchange it.

That way you have a gift from her that you can really use. I know she doesn't want to spend all that money on something that you aren't even going to use.

If it was from someone other than family I might say that they 'regifted' but since it's your aunt I'd tell her that you love the ice bucket but noticed that it was damaged and would like to exchange it

You can call her and explain there is a crack on the beautiful gift she gave to you guys. Nothing wrong with it

I agree, call her so that if she has the original receipt she can go in and take care of it. If she gets to stumbling and you notice she's uncomfortable, then its possible its a regift and you can just say something like, 'oh, its beautiful though. If you don't have the receipt, we can definitely use it.' You know, give her a way out just in case she didn't have the money this year or something.

You should probably give her a call and explain it to her. Hopefully she'll be understanding about it.

I'd call her 2 and just say if it's not too much trouble you'd like to exchange it. Maybe she got it on sale and that's the only one they had-in that case I'd just keep it.

i would definately tell her this way she can either exchange it, or return it for something else. you cant really use it if its got a crack in it

I would definitely tell her. That is too nice of a present to waste. The same thing happened to me. My FH's sister bought us beautiful crystal angel ornaments and one was broken. I told her and she said 'Oh I am so glad you told me. I wouldn't want you to have a broken gift.' And she is sending us the receipt so I can go and return it.

Re: What would you do?

Thanks ladies. We just spent the last three days painting the house (and now we have a plumber here...ugh and the cesspool needs to be pumped today ) so needless to say I haven't called her yet but I will. I doubt she regifted me as she has the most money in the family but maybe she got it at the outlet.

Thanks.
