So, my FMIL was trying to be helpful, and she went ahead and bought a dress for my flowergirl (who is her granddaughter). It was really nice of her, and the dress is really pretty. And she got it for a really good price. But, the dress is white and my dress is ivory. I really don't think this will look good in the pictures. So I asked her (nicely) if she wouldn't mind returning it. Do you think I was being too picky? I feel kind of bad, but I just really want the whole bridal party to match! FH and the GM's will be wearing ivory shirts, so the flowergirl would be the only one in white. What do you think?

I wouldn't say so... You were just nicely expressing your concerns... How did she react?

Re: what would you do?
At first she seemed like she wanted to keep the dress, but them FH's dad stepped in and said that it should definitely be ivory. Then she said she didn't mind bringing it back. I feel bad that she will have to return it, but FH and I really think it will look better if the flowergirl matches the rest of the bridal party!

She was trying to be helpful, but you're the bride, and she went ahead and bought an outfit for a member of the bridal party without asking. That's just wrong. You handled it fine. A white flowergirl dress, in my opinion, looks odd with an ivory bridal gown. And even if you just didn't like the style of the dress--you're the bride, it's your choice. So stick to your guns, let her return the dress, and find another one (but not a hugely extravagant one or it will look like you're throwing it in your FMiL 's face) that works for you.
Good luck! Isn't this wedding planning thing fun?

i totally agree. i see she was trying to be helpful, but i think its wierd for anyone to buy a dress for your FG without asking you about it first. there is nothing wrong with having her return or exchange it.

You didn't do anything wrong. To be honest, I'm no bridezilla, but I'd flip if someone went ahead and bought a dress for ANYONE in the bridal party without consulting me first. (Obviously MOB and MOG can get whatever they want, but if I were having a FG, I'd want to pick out the dress!)
You were absolutely right to politely explain the situation and ask her to return it. The dress should be ivory - white will make your gown and the GM shirts look dingy in pictures.

You're not being too picky. It's you're wedding, and you should be consulted about things like this. You did the right thing.

I think you both handled it really well.

I think you handled it well. You wouldn't want the FG to stick out and have everyone wonder why she didn't quite fit in. Did you ask FMIL if the dress comes in ivory too? Maybe that will soften the blow. It lets her know that you think the dress is beautiful, it's just the color that's wrong...

I am wearing ivory and wouldn't want the fg wearing white. It looks funny. These ivory issues...they're giving me a pain...

I definitely don't think you are being too picky. Your dress will look dirty in the pictures next to white.

I do not think you were being mean. I would have been the same way. I just everything to go together for the wedding.

I'm wearing ivory too, and I just decided not to worry about wearing different shades of ivory together. White and ivory look odd together, but different shades of ivory seem to tone together well enough. So I bought ivory shoes, and a light ivory veil, and will buy an ivory handbag when I find one I like, and if they're all not exactly the same shade, it's OK, they don't have to be. It looks nice, really. However, my flowergirl is wearing yellow, so that wasn't an issue anyway.
