What would you do?

Ok so I gave $800 non refundable dollars to a vendor. A vendor who I am really hating and is being a pain! He won't refund the money. I have another vendor lined up already. Do I write off the loss or stay with vendor?

What would you do?

I believe there's some sort of law that says a vendor must refund a deposit if it's within a certain time period??

I feel $800 is chump change compared to your happiness on your wedding day! I hope it all works out! ;o)

What would you do?

I would say it depends on what it's for. If it's something that either affects your guests having a good time or the way you remember your wedding (i.e., photos or video), then eat the $800 and go elsewhere. But if it's something that won't ruin the actual day and, while inconvenient, won't affect the way you remember your day years down the road, then stay.

I think unfortunately at this point... If you dont want to lose the money... keep the vendor. Unfortunately the Suffolk law that says the deposit is fully refundable up until 6 months prior is only applicable to the venue/RH. At least that's what I got from google. Vendors like DJs, photographers, videographers etc... Have contracts and its typically stated in the contract if the deposit is refundable. They have these contracts for a reason. Unless its not clearly stated in the contract regarding the deposit there is really no fighting it :(

What would you do?

I just feel with 22 months until my wedding and no service whatsoever aside from holding the date for a mere 1month that it is just poor business practice... If someone came to book my date and couldn't because of me is say ok fine he lost that person and that isn't fair to him... But he hasn't... The vendor just doesn't want to loose the money and is making it a real challenge to get my money back and won't even consider splitting the $800 retainer... At this point I think it is an extremely poor business practice as this is so far out and no service has been provided....
I feel like bad mouthing would hurt other brides and I don't want to bad mouth him either... It's just not something I would do an would only cause him harm but wouldn't get me my deposit back... All I want is my money back and that's it....
I'm very torn....

If it is going to be on your mind, then walk away. I know it is hard when you already put down money. But definitely make sure to check into the law if you can get your money back.

I researched and this only seems to apply to a reception hall not other vendors

I would say if you're that unhappy then unfortunately it would be best to loose the deposit. It really depends on the service though. What kind is it?

Honestly, I would be concerned about them messing up my pictures. If it were me I would probably just take the loss.

Is there anyway you can talk to the vendor and see if you can bring up the things you do not like and see if you can come to an agreement.

At this point I don't think talking to the vendor will help. We are at complete opposite ends and cannot find a middle ground

Re: What would you do?

I agree with this... these websites is where EVERY BRIDE AND GROOM come for reviews and advice... and if they are being unfair or if your not happy about something, then every other person should know about it..

Why did you have a problem with the vendor? Did you schedule a shoot and he wasn't accommodating? Was it a change of heart?

What would you do?

I think that if you are that far apart, I wouldn't trust him to take your photos. I know money is extremely tight, but for $800, is it worth looking back on your wedding in 20 years and either not having pictures to show for it (worst possible scenario), or hating the pictures you do have?

Have you looked into weddingpartyapp.com? It's an app that people can download onto their iPhone or Droid and take and share pics from your wedding with you and other guests. This might be an alternative. I also have a friend who is using a company for her video that sends her those little handheld video cameras (I forgot what they're called), and then you send them back at the end of the weekend and they edit it into a wedding video for you. Maybe they have something like that for photography too?

I think in the grand scheme of things, there's always more money to be made and to be spent, and for your peace of mind and memories for years to come, $800 is a hit I'd be willing to take.
