So my FI cousin RSVPd to the wedding weeks (well over 6) ago...her, her husband and 4 children and an unfant are coming...fine..that is 6 seats. So 2 weeks, my FI and I heard through the grape vine (i.e. his mother) that she heard from her sister, who heard from her brother (the cousins father) that they are no longer coming to the wedding (reason unimportant)...so we waited no phone call, no email...then the dealine passed last week for the hotel...no reservation (they are from TX and have no family in NY). still no call. What would you do..her little family is going to cost me over 500 dollars.
oh and my FMIL refuses to get involved so that is not an option..would you
1. Call the cousin and be upfront and ask her what is going on
2. Just assume she is not coming and have no place for her at the wedding
3. if she never call assume she is coming and risk lossing the $500 when she doesnt show up.
thanks in advance!!!

Re: what would you do with 3 and a half weeks to go
I'd call and ask. Tell her the truth, that you heard through the grapevine that they weren't coming and you just wanted to confirm if that was true.

I would call and say you heard they would not be able to make it. It's not unreasonable to do that. I wouldn't want to lose 500 dollars.

If you are concerned about paying extra money for 'no show' guests, I would definitely call them. Just call and tell them you wanted to make sure they were able to find a decent flight and hotel. Don't mention that you heard they may not arrive. Then, they won't suspect.
Be sure to call before your final payment is due to your reception hall.

thats what i thought and then my FI gets all squirmy...my FI and his mother dont believe in communication...they believe everyone should beat around the bush....I however and jsut completely fed up with this approach..I was taught that communication is the key and you should always be upfront and honest...but it is his family

Same here...I'd call and find out before you pay up.

Totally agree. That is too much of a cost to gamble with. Good luck!

I would call and tell them you know they didn't make hotel reservations and that you are concerned that something has happened which has caused them to change their plans, so you just want to touch base.

Do not risk losing the money. Give them a quick call to confirm their plans.

Call them.... Even if it's not about the money - it's also nice to know who you're expecting at your own wedding!

Put the final number in without them. The reception hall is much more likely to let you add than to let you subtract guests.
