What would you do?? (with Poll)

What would you do?? (with Poll)

So Fh and I make ok money to survive. I definitely won't be able to stay home after kids though.

So my job, I actually get paid more than I should..so me leaving to find something else would be pointless and probably a step down in pay.

He however Im sure could make about $20k more if he changed companies.

However...dilema: He's been with the company 9 years and he is extremely valued..(however not money wise. they are not good with raises.) If he left....it would hinder the office big time. So he has job security.

If he left..he could make more money but not have the job security.

We just bought a house too. We hate struggling and worry about money. But not sure if moving jobs with this economy would be the best thing.
thanks for your opinions ladies!!

since you are now getting married and have major responsibilities I think it would be the wrong time to change occupations what I think your fh can do is sit down and talk to his company and explain his situation and see what they will do for him. It never hurts to ask a question the only thing they can say is no so go for it

this is a hard situation..and we are almost in the same position...we just bought a house also..and fh is getting screwed by his job (they took a lot of money away from him..long story) but he is waiting until after the wedding to look for another job...he can't afford to lose job security right now..especially because he works mainly on commission...i would factor this in when deciding..can you afford to do it with the wedding coming up? or can it just wait?

We can definitely wait until after the wedding..but it's like...when would be a good time to change jobs!!! We were hoping to try for a child 6 months after the wedding..I don't see much changing in the economy by then...

Really stinks.. I HATE MONEY!!!!!!

i would probably wait until after the wedding to change jobs but I think he should either ask his place for a raise (if they value him that much and he tells them he is struggling financially - assuming he gets a higher offer elsewhere) or go somewhere else.

I don't know what he does but I've changed jobs 3x and each time I got significant increases and job security wasn't too much of an issue for me

he should sit down with his boss, explain that while he enjoys his job he could probably make $20k elsewhere and that its something he needs to really think about since you guys just bought a house, etc.

then maybe he could ask for a raise, and say that of course he would prefer to stay at his current job, but he doesnt believe he is getting paid what he is worth.

see what happens. i would definitely try that before quitting..

I think that you are in the stage of your lives that job security is extremely important- but maybe have him do a salary analysis on salary.com and maybe they will give him a raise

btw- we are on a hiring freeze at my company & at least three of my friends have the same thing at their companies- so I would say its probably not an ideal time to look for a job

definitely agree.

sometimes bosses take advantage of their employees and they know that it would be hard for them to start over elsewhere---and kind of keep them in a holding pattern with salary raises. obviously your FH's company is taking him for granted......and the best way to let someone know that they are taking you for granted is lettin them know that someone else could use them. he should let them know that he has been 'approached' elsewhere and wants to stay at his current job, but really needs a decent raise to do so. they might open their eyes and realize that he is an asset and they need to protect their asset!

Totally agree with what both ladies have said. It's sad that he's valued but not really...at least not how it counts which is financially at the end of the day.

could your FH sit down with his boss and talk about the finances?? that he is looking to make more money but likes the company that he is with and would like to stay but would need a raise? is that possible?

Re: What would you do?? (with Poll)

Thanks for all your opinions and advise. Im leaning towards waiting until the economy is better and wedding is over.(only five months away)

The problem with talking with his boss is that he works for an oil company..and contrary to popular belief..these oil prices are killing them...so anyone will be lucky if they get raises at all this year. No one can pay their oil bills!!!

FH wants to change industries too.. he's an operations manage and can take that anywhere.

I really appreciate everyone's comments and suggestions!! You guys are great!!!

Edited for spelling.

Re: What would you do?? (with Poll)

I was in the same position a few years ago. I worked for a great company, was very valuable and had job security. However, their salary just didnt cut it. Eventually I moved on to a much better salary and it was worth it. Believe it or not I do less work and make more money while there I did more and made less.

I loved it but I got over it...I needed the money, to me, at the end of the day its work.

If he absolutley loves his job than dont force it, if not than go for it.
