Ok here is the situation. My FBIL asked FH to borrow his car this weekend. We will both be away so we have no use for it- that is not the problem.
My FH had 3 accidents last year- two were NOT his fault. As a result he got dropped from his insurance and his paying through the nose with his new insurance. He is on probation for the next couple of years.
His brother is somewhat of a reckless driver, I told FH that I did not think it was a good idea to lend him the car. Fh says that I am being heartless- how can he say no to his brother.
I still stand my ground- I would NOT have lent him the car.
What are your thoughts????

Re: What would you have done???
I would have said...Let him rent a car!
If your FH loses his insureance because of you FBIL maybe having an accident...is it worth him not have insurance? How would he get to work?
There are alot of things to consider when letting someone drive your car!!
I think that you should have FH be very stern that there cannot be an accident...and explain the reasons why...
DH's friends rolled Dh's truck a few years back, so when they were driving cross country together, I told him I'd kill him if he got into an accident...and after 2600 miles...everything was fine

considering the issue, I don't think it is a good idea and FBIL should be considerate of that.

Re: What would you have done???
i'm with you - he can rent a car if he really needs to use one. it may seem heartless but if he gets into an accident (and anything is possible!!) - you guys are screwed!!!
just to let you know....you can put both cars under your name...it will relieve a bit of the insurance expense...I had to do that for DH

Re: What would you have done???
i agree, and FH who works in insurance agrees......
also your FH shouldnt have been dropped from his insurance if only one accident was his fault, and 0% on the other 2....

He was with All State- I hear they drop you like a hot potato.
I wish he would reconsider lending him the car- this worries me.

I probally would have done the same thing. Or made FBIL agree that he'd pay for any damages

Re: What would you have done???
I say getting between a man and his brother is no good... I TOTALLY get frustrated b/c my DH does stupid stuff like this all the time but I can't talk- it's his brother. And you have to be there for family- you just do.
I would tell him- fine, but if he wrecks, you get a 2nd job to pay the new insurance bill.

Don't lend the car, when in doubt leave it out.

K-
Would he still lend it to his brother even seeing how much it upsets you?

Re: What would you have done???
Future- my FH has a strong sense of family. He would do anything for them- something I love about him, but there are situations such as this that I have no control over.
He does realize the severity of these actions and he had a conversation with his brother warning him to be careful, but being the worry wart that I am this is simply not enough.
We'll see what happens.

Re: What would you have done???
I wouldnt of lent it to him. Years back my husband lent his car to his brother and there was no collision on it and he had an accident that was his fault and it cost $4000 to fix it and the brother never paid back. My husband let him go on it because his brother has nothing, no money! I would be very bothered if he lent his car to him again.

Re: What would you have done???
No Way would I lend my car to someone who has a bad track record and is a known reckless driver. If you think turning him down will cause tension, just think of the tension that you'll have if he damages your car and your insurance goes sky high!
I wouldn't take the chance.

Re: What would you have done???
Speaking from the standpoint of an insurance agent, there is no way, no how that I would lend the car. Since your husband has already been dropped from one company and from your description is sounds like he was placed in either a high risk or assigned risk category, if a lending loss is added to his insurance history his rates will stay higher longer. Most insurance companies look at lending losses as a serious no-no. If your husband wants his rates to go down anytime soon lending out your vehicle is not the way to do it.
Speaking now as the eldest of 5, I still would not lend my car to any of my siblings. I trust them all, but I made the mistake once of registering a car for one of my sisters and then when her ex decided not to pay the insurance, my license got suspended!!! . It caused a rift in our relationship for some time. I make it a rule never to loan cars or money, or do business with a relative. It's not heartless it's smart!!!!
