Re: whats a duvet?
it's just the cover for a comforter. it has buttons and you slip the comforter inside. i just discovered this last year hehe.

Re: whats a duvet?
They are good because you can change them out depending on your mood or season. If you're good with a sewing machine, you can make your own.

Re: whats a duvet?
actually a duvet is a plain (usually) white (usually) down conforter...that you can put duvet covers on...if you have a regular comforter...you can also use a duvet cover on that...
so a duvet is actually a blanket
duvet covers can cover duvets or other comforters...

Re: whats a duvet?
A magazine put it best by saying that a duvet cover is like a big pillowcase for your comforter

Re: whats a duvet?
It depends....the comforter cover idea is correct but I know my FH calls his down comforter that he used to have on his old bed his duvet. So sometimes it means the comforter itself. But I think both definitions are correct.

Re: whats a duvet?
I think your DH is right Maribelle....this is what it was always called when I was growing upfrom dictionary.com
du·vet ( P ) Pronunciation Key (d-v, dy-)
n.
A quilt, usually with a washable cover, that may be used in place of a bedspread and top sheet.
but I think many stores have been calling the cover...a duvet...instead of duvet cover...this makes a lot of sense though...why my family doesn't use flat sheets...the duvet cover is the flat sheet substitute

Re: whats a duvet?
Yabbo...yes my FH doesnt' use a flat sheet, just the fitted sheet and the duvet.I had to get used to no flat sheet. I don't really like it but I figured it isnt' the worst thing in the world. The only thing is I wash my comforter (it doesn't have a cover over it) more often. Hmm. Oh well.
Yabbo your family is German - I think the duvet w/ no flat sheet is more european in nature.
