What's the average wedding gift you have given/received so far?
Our estimates were WAY off - we thought one person would give $100-118, and two ppl. would give $218-$236 (doubling chai)
So not the case!!!!!! one person gave us ONE candlestick for $50, and many couples are giving us $100 gifts! What the F? Am I being spoiled?? When we go to weddings we are sooo generous!

I think the gifts that come before the wedding-- the people who are most likely not coming to the wedding give less..
We got a lot from some people and less than others.. I guess it evens out..

I usually give $300, but if it's a really good friend I try to give more.
I know it's really annoying, but just remember we are not in this for the gifts! Or at least we shouldn't be!

i hear ya... my one friend gave us a few things for the wedding... we didn't need them, so we took them back to kohls ( i knew thats where she got them cause she works there).... we got $5 back for the fajita maker, $2.50 for the electric can opener.... so basically..... her and her guest gave us a $7 gift!!!!! GRR!!!! i'll remember that if she ever gets married... LOL just goes to show, you can't count on making back the money you spend on your wedding....

usually I give about $200 if both of us are going. but more if it is a really close friend or relative. One of my cousins from down south sent us $100 worth of our towels she can't come to the wedding. And I think thats great too.

I am sorry but I would be really upset if I registered for a glasses for $50 and someone walks in to my wedding with a family of four with that as their gift.
JMO.
I am totally with you MM!! that's the problem i'm about to face with one of my mother's brother's...he has a family of 6, i invited four, he yelled and cursed out my mom (someone else in fam told me), and she felt bad and included the whole lot, and he is famous for giving a toaster or blender: AT THE WEDDING!
his family = $400 toaster = um, $15
is my math off or does this not add up
and my mother would never do that, and they were raised by the same parents...I don't get it!

We usually give $250-$300 depending on who it is...if it's a relative or a really good friend we try to give more.

Re: What's the average wedding gift you have given/received so far?
Remember, what might be a 'normal' gift amount for NY is not necessarily normal for other parts of the country. We're used to much more expensive gifts here! Doesn't excuse someone for being cheap, but like a previous poster said - we're not supposed to be in this for the gifts! The gesture of a gift is nice in itself. And besides, its usually the people who aren't that close to you that give the 'cheaper' gifts anyway.

Re: What's the average wedding gift you have given/received so far?
We just gave $250 for a wedding at VFW for my FH's friend's brother. But, I am trying not to calculate what we make. I realize from the stories I've heard, some people just don't know what a wedding costs these days, or some don't have it to give. Of course it would be nice if everyone covered their plates - but it just doesn't happen.

Re: What's the average wedding gift you have given/received so far?
I would say $$.
I also think most older people give around $100/couple I think we, youngins understand and give $200+ per couple
I just dont think they realize how much it costs
How do you know how much you are getting already?

well we usually give about $200-$250 but for his BF who got married about 4 years ago we gave him $500.00 plus buying their bathroom set too. It really depends on who it is for us but $200.00 is the least that we give.

there is no ryhme or reason as to what people will give you as gifts. You could have one person give you $25 and the next give you $500. It's very different from one person to the next. And there's no way to calculate what you will get.
If you think you'll make money from your wedding, prepare yourself now. It normally doesn't happen that way. I got back about half of what I spent, but in all honesty, I know people gave us what they could and having them there with us to celebrate was so much more important than the dollar amount of their gift.

Re: What's the average wedding gift you have given/received so far?
I agree with differnent etiquette in different parts of the county.
My dad likes to tell the story of his first wedding after moving to VA. He asked a guy at work what's appropriate for a gift in VA - he told him he was planning on giving the couple $50 (mind you, this was over 25 years ago).
The guy looked at him and said 'You're giving money? That's the lazy way! Plus, $50 is way to much to spend, give them $25'
My dad was already thinking $50 was too little (He and my mom gave $75-$100 at weddings at the time).
For a wedding in VA, I'll give about $50 for me, $100 for kev and I (and that's more than my friends give).
NY Is about $75-$100 for me, $150-$200 for Kev and I (And we're broke )
