What's the deal with protein?

What's the deal with protein?

Heya everyone, quick question:

I see a lot of very well-inormed girls on here saying that women need to get a certain amount of protien at every meal. I had no clue about this!

I could never do a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet (I couldn't live without bread), so is this a necessity for everyone? And if so, why? I know it has something to do with building muscle, but what if you aren't weight training and are only doing cardio (like lazy me)? And don't protein rich foods have a lot more calories and fat than, uh, protein poor foods?

Okay, I guess that wasn't so quick! So, basically I want to know if I should take soy milk in my cereal and whole wheat pitas with my hummus or not?

Thanks a bunch for helping me out on this one, ladies!

protein rich foods do not have more calories and fat than non protein foods!

lean proteins are chicken, lean beef, fish (which has good fats) beans, whey, fat free dairy, Nuts(good fat, again)etc....

You need protein for muscle recovery and a good metabolism. Yes, it is definitly a necessity for EVERYONE!

why aren't you weight training? even if you aren't weight training you need protein. If I wasn't weight training, my diet would have to be so damn strict it is ridiculous. All those carbs would just turn to fat.

Why do you feel you can't have a decent protein intake everyday?

You do not need a low carb diet, but a well balanced one with lots of whole grains, protein and good carbs to be a healthy individual.

very good explination!! also another benefit to eating high protein foods, is that they make you feel full and satisfied. so you will not run around hungry.
