We just finished booking our venue (our wedding will be on 9/16/11), now...what's the next step and how far in advance???

After RH I did DJ and Photographer, then DOC then Florist I believe.

I booked in this order:
RH Church Photog DJ Limo Florist
All of this was done before I hit the year mark.

I did church, RH (DJ came with RH), my dress, then photographer/videographer, next is going to be sending out STD's and booking limo and florist

i booked Photo/Video first after the RH and Church because a lot of the popular vendors on here book up fast

after the RH i booked church then photographer then music band. you still have over a year but i'd start researching because some vendors book up fast.

i would say band and then photo/video. those can both book very quickly.
i also found hair and makeup to book fast too.

If I remember for major vendors we did:
Church RH Limo Photog/Video DJ Florist
We got engaged in July and had all this done by Christmas with 7 months to go before the wedding. Set a timeline for yourself and stick to it. It worked wonders for me!!

Book a place for your ceremony (church, etc), then photo & video, and DJ/band. Those seem to book up the farthest in advance.

I'd recommend getting photography/video and music booked next.. Those tend to be the ones that people are most upset about when they find out they're already booked
