As far as I remeber the franklin institute is kind of remote. If I had oen or tw days in philly I'd check out the historical sites, and I'd got o south street. SO much shopping. It's like 8th street was in it's heyday..ok maybe more commericalized, but just as exciting. There's a really great sex shop (i know, leave it to me to kow the sex shops) called 'the mood' and they have relaly nice stuff, and it's not at all raunchy in there, it's really aimed toward couples and romance, a block or two away there's its sister store, condom kingdom, which caters basically to frat boys, but it's a fun experience going in there. There are also a lof of used books store type places and palces to buy art and beads and unique stuff.

Also, this is the season of the philly fi;m festival, I don't know if it;s over or still going on, but they had GREAT stuff. I loved seeing a silent fi;m w/ a live orchestra. So much fun. It's similar to the tribeca fi;m festival.

i don't know TOO much about philly. For the 4 years FH was there, we didn't leave the room much

hahaha! someone's a lil kinky i'll have to go to 'the mood' and its sister store while i'm there! thanks!

I love Philly. My sister lives there. Last year we were there for 4th of July and they had a great fireworks show and a fun parade. There is a French crepes resturant that we love, I will have to get the name. So many shops and bars, everyone is friendly. There is a huge Amish market.

i love creped food! if you happen to remember please let me know! - before i head off to philly

I will, and it is such a good place too!!

which places are grouped together as for distance from each other? reason why i ask is i doubt i'll be driving to these places. i get nervous when it comes to driving through unfamiliar territory. so i think i would rather schedule myself to go to AREA A and the next day AREA B and etc.

Liberty Bell
Franklin Institute
Manayunk
Edgar Allen Poe House
South Street
Philadelphia Museum of Art
RittenHouse
Indenpendence Hall
etc?

thanks all!!!!!

i live 2 miles from center city philadelphia. although i didnt get a chance to go there as often as i liked, i think philly is a great city!! you definitely have to check out independence hall, the philly art museum, center city, south street, and penn's campus. as for restaurants....you should try Buddakan. Its sooo yummmyyy and the decor is awesome. Heck, you can go to any steven starr restaurant and i'm sure you'll be pleased.

here's the website to buddakan
www.buddakan.com

and here's steven starr's website with links to his other restaurants:
www.starr-restaurants.com

i just checked out buddakan's website and holy cow! it's beautiful! hopefully we'll be able to squeeze that in! thanks for recommending!

Re: what's there to do in Philadelphia?

Independence Hall and the liberty bell are in the same area, I think. They just built a new place for the lib bell. I don't remeber where it is. i just remeber going to the akr where independence hall is and they had to x ray my tripod and my lens and everything nefore they would let me in. if I remember correctly, those hisroical sites are walking distance from south street, and then at the end of south street you have penn's landing, there's a lot to do, that's the main focus area where there's a lot of youth, and then you'll also see 'the duck' this weird bus/boat thing which I think they have in other cities. I would NOT reccomend driving in philly, especially in the area of south street and historical district. The streets are really narrow, and confusing, and on south street there are constantly people crossing at any time and point, and the aofrementioned ducks are corwding the streets. it took us 45 minutes to drive up south street one day, and it was only about a mile. So it's better if you get a cab or a bus to one point and walk it. Philly's a good walking city, and its beautiful this time of year.

Also to me the buses and subways in philly were sort of confusing, we've had better luck with cabs. HTH

Okay i'd probably start first w/Liberty Bell/Independence Hall (5th and Market Streets)and work your way west. Buddakan is right by Independence Hall so maybe you can go there for lunch. I would definitely call and make reservations bc they book up very quickly!! The Edgar Allen Poe house is on 7th and Spring Garden, so it's in the same area as well.

After the historic district, you should probably head over to South Street; next to RittenHouse (18th and Walnut), then to the Franklin Institute (20th and Race) and the Philadelphia Museum of Art (26th and Ben Franklin Pkwy) and last Manayunk.

Just remember that Market street is the main street that runs East West, and all the numbered Streets run North-South and get higher as you move from East to West. HTH!!!

Justshir - how was it? what did you do?

Re: what's there to do in Philadelphia?

shopping:
As soon as we set foot onto philly, scott and i briefly went through South Street and found the area to be kinda grundge / gothic / ghetto. totally not our scene at all so we quickly went to Rittenhouse instead. altho their shops are pretty much the same as nyc, it was def something we're more used to as opposed to south street's retroesque music record stores.

food:
we went to Morimoto's for dinner and it was great! and for lunch the next day we went to Buddakan which was graciously recommended by ICHERIAN! we loved the food there! and teh atmosphere in both restaurants' amazing!

sights:
chinatown was blah.
made an attempt to go see the liberty bell but it was so overcrowded i didn't bother.

i did do some walking around but not hard core. scott and i weren't there for long. i was hoping to see more but we decided to come home early because we missed our pet bird =D altho we stayed in philly for a brief moment, i had a nice relaxing time!
below are pix of buddakan and some building i was able to take a picture of while it was at its least busiest!
