What's with the big E-parties?

What's with the big E-parties?

Hi ladies!

I'm starting to wonder...am I the only one without a big engagement party? I've been seeing so many people sending out invites, getting favors, and spending lots of money on this. No offense to those of you that did, i think they are beautiful but I just didn't really see it as necessary. My parents just invited my side of the fam over (FH's is out of state) our house and we had a cake and food catered but it was really low key. I did recieve quite a bit of gifts which i wasn't expecting. Are e-parties the thing now??

i feel like i missed something lol.

We didn't have an E-party of any sort. Just a small brunch with immediate family the morning after we got engaged.

You aren't the only one who didn't have one! I knew even before I became engaged I would never have an engagement party. I feel between the shower and the wedding, you are asking people to spend a lot of money on you and an engagement party is just an additional thing and not necessary. But that is just MY opinion! In my 30 years, I have only been to one engagement party! Maybe they are more popular now.

I wanted to have a e-party to celebrate with our families. People have been asking me about our registry and I told them gifts are not neccessary. I don't think it is about the gifts and money but about everyone coming together...at least that;s my purpose for having one!!

We're not having one...we are having a welcome to NY party for my FH instead...it'll give everyone an opportunity to meet him and FSD and to get together and celebrate all the happy occasions in our lives atm

I did not have one. I know a lot of people who do. We did not do it because of timing issues and we decided we would rather have his parents put the money towards the wedding.

I didnt have one. I knew I wouldnt have one even if DH or family wanted to have it. I personally feel that they arent necessary and I didnt want anyone spending anymore money .....I feel the shower and wedding are enough.

yeah we felt the same way. Our parents threw us an e-party at the INHP but it was a sunday afternoon with like 40-50 immediate family members. No invites went out or any cps, djs or anything. I made little choc lollipops as favors but that was it. we just wanted our families together to celebrate with us but didn't want to spend money on a mini wedding type e-party.

Ours was kind of big because most of my family is OOT and I consider my friends my family and I couldn't invite certain friends without the others and FH's family is big. We invited about 125 and about 80 people showed

Mine was relatively small. We had 50 people at my dad's country club for a Sunday brunch. It was buffet style, no assigned seating, not even a full bar. But everyone had a great time.

I did cheap invites on vistaprint, jars with truffles for favors, and that was it. No CP's or anything like that.

I think if you have the money to throw the party.. go for it. I also think it's more popular with longer engagements.

we had an e party for 60 people with a cocktail hour, sit down dinner, dessert, open bar, DJ and favors (I guess like a mini mini wedding... considering there were only 60 people there). It really was so FH family and my family can meet eachother and also some close friends and the bridal party could get together. And by the time Nov 6th rolls around we would be at an almost 2 year engagement. i think it was nice and stress free to have the families meet with lots of people around and in a party atmosphere.

Also, I dont think, or at least I would hope that people don't throw parties in the mind of getting gifts. It costs money to throw the party to begin with... so at that point if it were just for gifts what's the point... might as well buy them yourself. KWIM? I did get gifts at the engagement party... but honestly I wasn't really expecting too much. I honestly didn't even really give it a thought before the party. However it was a GREAT jump start for us in saving money for the wedding. So we were greatful!

We only had the immediate families together about 6 months after we got engaged. Parents, siblings and their significant others, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins...so like 25 people if that. We just had it at FIL's house, they had hot trays of food from the pizza place, lots of wine, desserts, and it was great. Was more of a shower because they made us open our gifts from all them. I enjoyed it, it wasn't big or fancy, but honestly having an eparty does set the precedent with extended family, and you have to be careful with that too because then you're not taken as seriously. Double edged sword.

I agree with the other post about not wanting people to spend additional $$...I actually don't even want a bridal shower.

We already live together and just want our closest friends and family to help us celebrate our marriage.

I have also never need to an engagment party either

We are having one only because FHs parents are throwing us one. Its going to be very casual no DJ or anything like that. Not to offend anyone but i dont get the whole mini-wedding engagement parties.

my family is too big to celebrate at my house or my parents house... so we rented a room at his brothers firehouse and had a casual party..i don't think its a big deal... just want we wanted

we didn't have an e-party, nor did we want one. I feel like asking people for a shower and a wedding gift is enough. I didn't want to make people feel like they needed to give us an engagement gift too.

Also, we are older. (I turned 40 right after we got engaged, FH was 41). We have both been on our own for years and really don't need much.

E-partys are definitely more common now. I have never had a friend who had one!

Oh and our families haven't met yet (yes, there's a long story there). At this rate, I don't think they will before the wedding (FILs live out of state) and dont seem inclined to come in before the wedding.

Re: What's with the big E-parties?

We are having an e-party. All of my friends who are getting married/got engaged had one too. Since we will have almost a 2 year engagement we didn't want to wait to celebrate! I do not see anything wrong with it. I happily attended my friends e-parties b/c I was excited for them! And didn't think twice about it. I have had so much fun at my friends e-parties (much more fun than I have had at their showers!)!!!!

We started receiving congratulatory gifts almost immediately after we got engaged, before anyone even thought about having an e-party. Maybe we just have overly generous friends, but I am definitely not having an e-party to receive gifts. I think my parents would be just as happy to give FH & I the cash they are spending on the e-party to the 2 of us instead.
