DH and I are doing research on neighborhoods for a condo or house purchase next year in eastern Nassau or western/central Suffolk.
Would you mind sharing what town you live in and what are the pro's and con's of your neighborhood are? Specifically we're interested in:
1. Proximity to a commercial area (villages like Port Jeff and Huntington are our favorites)
2. Proximity to a train station for commuting
3. Value/upkeep of homes or condos in your area.
Any help you could give would be wonderful.
Thanks in advance!

Re: What's your neighborhood like?
I grew up in Huntington (like a 3 minue walk from the village right 'up the hill' from the Walbaums) and it was great. The neighborhood where I lived has lots of modestly sized houses but a lot of them are being redone (on that outside at least) so the neighborhood is clean looking and well kept...
The train station is in probably the worst part of town (huntington station) but you can also go to the Cold Spring Harbor station (which is 1 closer to NYC and much nicer)
As far as schools, when I graduated in '97 everything was fine but my mom is a teacher in the district and says that at the HS level things aren't what they used to be (more discipline problems and stuff) but that could just be an overall trend

Re: What's your neighborhood like?
We bought a house in Ridge in 2005. We love the area (prices are great) & it is a very family orientated community! it is a small community and most people that live in the area have lived there all there lives and there kids are now raising familys there.... everyone pretty much keeps there house nice and clean kept! (of course every neighborhoood has that one or two that just don't care or dont have the time or money)
cons: it feels like we are far away from everyone...(only 8 minutes from Riverhead outlet) even though we are only about 15-20 minutes away from our family & friends....
Good Luck!

scary, we have gangs and scary men roaming aroudn the streets at night. if you open the windows, you hear gunshots and babies screaming. we have to buy new tires twice a week from the mystery knife wielding night crawler.
other than that, it's a great place to live.
it's your basic decently manicured lawn neighborhood, really close to the mall and train station. really close to the grocery store. nothing too scary.

I grew up in Setauket, which is a great area with really good school district. Fh and I bought a house in Port Jeff Station. I can walk to the train station and down town port. The negative is that there are a lot of homeless that hang out on Rt. 112 but they are pretty harmless. I live on a dead end street with three other houses so it is very quiet.
