When booking an RH...

what do people mean when they refer to their 'safe' number? What is the general rule of thumb when trying to come up with a guarantee number???

Figure 20% of your guest will decline if most of your guests are local and 30% if the majority are from out of town.

generally, 20% no's is about right ... but because it could be a lot more than that (i had about 30% no's even though most guests were local), you could just subtract 10 guests from that number (so if you are inviting 200, your safe num could be 130)

What she said! We originally planned to invite about 200 and guaranteed 150. We wound up inviting about 220 and our final count was 186. HTH!

A safe # would be one that you can 'easily' see guaranteeing after figuring up the people who are invited but won't come (OOT'ers, elderly etc)
In the beginning of looking we knew we'd invite a little over 200 and starting telling halls that. Which is a BIG mistake. We ended up invited 220, guaranteed 150 and had 178 come.

So just curious...why was it a big mistake???

Because then they want you to guarantee 200 people and if 200 don't show, you're stuck paying for empty seats.
