I know the invitations that I want and I know where I am going to purchase them, but when do I actually have to go and order them? Is 6 months too early? Thanks ladies

It depends on where you are getting them.
Custom invitations usually require 4-8 months BEFORE you want to send them out to start designing; while some online companies only require 1-2 months!

I just ordered my invitations yesterday and my wedding is January 3rd.

I would say that as soon as you know what times you want on your reception cards, etc, order them. That way you have enough time to assemble them and get them in the mail on time.

ITA - the more time you have to assemble them, the less annoying the task will be.

Everyone laughed at me when I ordered my invites in April, 8 months before my wedding (and 6 months before I send them).
I can't tell you how happy I am I did because what should have taken 2-3 weeks took FOUR MONTHS!!! I just wanted our names on the front to be staggered instead of strait across, but that was apparently too difficult for the people at Carlson Craft. And when they finally figured out how to stagger our names, they screwed up the wording.
Moral of the story, order sooner rather than later!!
