When do you give an engagement gift?

My BIL just got engaged and they are having an engagement party. I bought her a book and a wedding organizer. Do I give that to her now and then a separate gift for the two of them at the eparty? I'm thinking a sep gift at the eparty but I was just wondering what you girls thought. TIA
