They say 6 months before the wedding, but I did that and it was kind of early because mine came in one week after I ordered them. It really depends on how long it takes whomever you get them from to make them up and how long it's going to take a calligrapher to do them if you are having them done.

I would order your invites in March/April that way to give you enough time to stuff the envelopes. If your wedding is in Sept. then you want to mail them out in July

Definitely by April the latest to give you stuffing time and addrressing time.

we ordered them a year in advance.....i like to get things done as soon as possible

I would agree with around April/May. You want them early enough to get them done and mailed about 2-2 1/2 months before the wedding but you don't want them too early in case something changes (which is rare but if it happens it could be bad!) even if it is just a time of something!
