We got engaged almost a month ago. His family knows we are looking for places and they readily offer their opinion. When would they maybe offer some help?? (Even just like paying for band or something)... When did it happen for you? Did any of you not get any money from FH's fam?

Re: When does the groom's family offer to help out???
It hasn't yet... And we already booked our band, and our hall...
We love our parents, its not like we don't have a good relationship with them... It is the exact opposite... We are really really close... That I think they are automatically going to contribute, but its not like we are expecting it and planning our wedding around money we don't have, we are still trying to do it on our own.
I guess its different with all families...
Good luck!

They never said a word until one day they mentioned thay wanted to throw us an engagement party since they couldnt help us pay for the wedding.
We never expected them or my parents to pay up.
We are paying for everything and if they want to give us a nice gift that would be great

Re: When does the groom's family offer to help out???
having people pay for certain parts is very traditional and almost out of date.
its common for couples to DIY... we needed help and ask for it. We dont talk at all with DW parents... my parents arent exactly rock-a-fellar.... so dont depend on 'X, Y and Z' from people as you can get into serious problems this way.

They didnt. My FI asked them if they could pay for the RD. Which they said they could

Re: When does the groom's family offer to help out???
I had DH talk to his family about making a contribution. He didn't specify an amount, he just told them to give us what they could afford. It turned out to be a lot of money, which was technically our wedding gift, but they gave it to us ahead of time and told us to use it towards anything we wanted. That money wound up paying for the band, the photographer/videographer, and the RD.

Re: When does the groom's family offer to help out???
My FMIL offered to pay for the flowers about 4 months after we got engaged. I honestly didn't think that she was going to be able to help out at all and am very grateful that she offered.

If they are in a good financial position and you know they can afford to help you out then maybe you can feel them out. Your FH can mention to them how much it is going to cost and ask them if they have any plans on contributing. You are not asking them for money, but just trying plan accordingly so you know what your budget will be. If you handle it the right way, it shouldn't come off offensive. If they are not in a good position financially to help you out then I wouldn't approach them or expect any help.

It never did. They paid for the RD and then gave us a VERY generous wedding gift but nothing before the wedding.

Re: When does the groom's family offer to help out???
I never talked to them but let FI deal with this. They are not American and don't know the 'rules' anyway. He is also an only child, which changes things. He talked to them about a month after we got engaged.
In the end the just gave my mother a check about 3 months in to our engagement, which covered about half of the reception. There were no arguments or anything. Had they not give us this, we would have just done something simpler.
Overall they have been extremely generous.

Re: When does the groom's family offer to help out???
About 3 months after we got engaged (we had the hall and the band booked at this point) my FIL's had my parents over for a BBQ. At this point they told my parents that they would like to pay for the band, photo/video, officiant, valet and a morning after brunch. We were very lucky.
