When picking a photographer Do you think...

it's better to choose one that was recommended by your hall? Because they are familiar with the layout of the hall and will be able to take better pictures. What do you think?

I think it helps a little, with ours, he was very familiar with our Hall, so he knew where to go, how to pose us and where , and we ended up getting done early enough to join the CH..BUT..I think a good photographer will be able to look around and judge as well...SO I wouldnt worry all that much about it.

I think that any photographer you choose will know the layout of your hall. I went to a photographer that not alot of people use and he was like we go to the watermill once a month. I just think the ones they recommend are either getting a kickback or are giving something to be on the hall's list. JMO.

I thought that, but my photographers, who were recommended by my hall, ended up being the one bad part of an otherwise beautiful day. I met with other photographers recommended by my hall and found I didn't like their business ethics.

Find a good photographer, and then find a bride on here who has ALREADY USED THEM.

When shopping around for photographers you can ask if they've ever shot a wedding at your hall, if that's important to you. If they haven't, perhaps they can go with you a month before the wedding just to look around and familiarize themselves with the place. Our photographer is doing that since she's never shot at the temple where we're getting married.

my photographer is not a recommended vendor with my hall, but she told me we can meet at the hall and go around so she can get familiar with it.

Maybe, but not necessarily.

My photographer seemed to know most of the halls. In fact, he saw a pic from my brother's wedding and said 'Riviera, right?' He recognized the inside.

I think that most photographers have been to most of the halls....ask them if they have or to see pictures that were taken there. WHen we met with Silver Fox the owner was specifically telling us where they take pictures at the Swan Club and this is one of the reasons that we booked them....and Silver Fox is not the house vendor at the Swan Club.

You also need to feel comfortable with the photographer

Photographers that are recommended by your hall pay the hall to be recommended so it doesn't mean that they are any better than another photographer.

That's true.

If you go see a photographer who isn't recommended by your hall, ask to see pictures of your hall.

Yup, all recommended vendors pay the hall lots of money to be recommended. When you use these 'recommended' vendors, the hall gets a kickback.

It can help, but I know the photographer my hall recommends is not highly recommended by anyone else - my friend used them & her photos were terrible - so just do your research. Sometimes it works, other times, you might need to look elsewhere.

One thing to note, the vendors recommended by the hall are paying to be recommending so see there work before you decide you definately decide on them.

I agree with everyone that picking a vendor who has been to the hall (or at least is willing to visit before the wedding is important).

The 'hall recommended' vendor is basically just an advertising device. The hall gets a kickback if you use them. They won't be more familiar with yuor hall than any other vendor. Every vendor I've spoken with (and most were not hall recommended) was able to show me or tell me specifically about several events at my hall. They do so may weddings, they've all been everywhere. And I also find that the hall recommended vendors are often more expensive.

I agree with the above. My photographer is phenomenal. I found him because he photographed a huge layout for a local wedding magazine and I noticed the tiny wording indicating who the photographer was. He has photographed weddings at my venue in the past and is NOT on the recommended vendor list. I think that list is a bunch of fluff anyway.

Most photographers now the layouts of halls, They probably have shot there a lot before.
As a photo major I will tell you that a photographer doesnt really need to know the layout they have an eye for it.

I'm getting married at a Temple that some vendors have not been to yet. I wanted a photographer that is familiar with the place but I don't like the house photog. My photographer will be there early enough to learn the layout of the place. I hope that's good enough. It was not worth going with a photog. that I did not like.

I have to agree also. I'm a photo buff (was going for a photo minor, but...whatever), and you really don't need to know the layout of a place...a good photo is a good photo. I think it's more important to pick the right photogrpaher for you. I didn't really even look at the recomended vendors list

ET: With a photogrpaher I think you need to find somsone who's work speaks to you in some way. I remeber wven before I was engaged and my sis was getting amrried seeing ads for a particular photo place and they just spoke to me..then I found out the person who took them had moved, and I found him, and I think I'm going to stick with him, even though I may look around to be sure. You just have to find what jumps out at you.
