I want to know when I should actually start trying out wedding gowns. Can this be done as soon as the place is booked? or should the bride buy it a few months before the wedding? how does this work?
I need a WEDDINGS FOR DUMMIES type of manual...do they have those? lol

Re: When should a bride buy her wedding gown?
Depending on the gown, it can take up to a year for it to come in...I'm not getting married until next July but I've already chosen a dress. Whenever you're ready is the right time, but since your wedding is so far away you can have any dress you want

I can't agree with you more. If you see the dress that you set your eyes and heart on, schedule an appointment for a fitting. And if you can resist the temptation of all the other dresses that will be available in the upcoming seasons then get it. If not, then hold off until you see something that would be perfect for your wedding, the styles are not too old or new. I def recommend giving it at least 7months in advance due to alternations and changes to the dress. If you are planning to have it shipped, add an extra 4-6 weeks.

Re: When should a bride buy her wedding gown?
I purchased mine 10 months before my wedding.
It took about 6 months to come in.

it can't hurt to look now. if you're not sure of the style you want, it might help to start looking, that way you will have plenty of time to try on various styles of dresses. i'm getting married in march and i ordered my dress last month. they told me it's supposed to come in december. however, one of my friends getting married this october ordered her dress in june 2008 and was told her dress was supposed to come in april and she still hasn't gotten it yet. hearing that made me order mine sooner than i thought i would

Re: When should a bride buy her wedding gown?
Im getting married in April 2010 and I went in April 2009 for my dress and I dont have to go back to get fitted for it unitl August and hey will order it then. So if you go look whenever you want they ask for a small deposit then when you go get measured to order they ask for half the money down. Well that is how the salon I went to was. Have fun with it and start trying on whenever you want it was alot of fun. Good luck

Re: When should a bride buy her wedding gown?
I picked out and put my gown on hold last month, and I'm going to get measured for it and officially order it in the next few weeks. I'm getting married in a year and 2 weeks! But my designer takes 9-10 months to get the gown in.
It all depends on your designer and how likely you are to change your mind.

You can start looking any time you're ready. My wedding is a month after yours and I already ordered mines, so it's not to soon just to browse

Re: When should a bride buy her wedding gown?
It's funny that you ask this. I ordered my gown in Oct 08 for my May '10 wedding. It came in the other day, and guess what? The store ordered the wrong gown. I am so happy that I still have a year until the wedding. Now the store will be able to fix it without a problem. What if I had ordered it later? I say order early and save yourself possible headaches.

I feel panicky now lol...I'm one of those people that has a tiny grey cloud waiting to rain over their heads....Thank you all for your help...I will definitely go try the dress on next month since its close to home. I'm not sure how it works there since its not a fancy designer ( I think).

Re: When should a bride buy her wedding gown?
i started looking in feb and my wedding isn't until next november. so it's never too early to start looking. but I'm not planning to order my dress until later this year. i wanted to give myself some time after finding a dress i really like and then going back a few months later to see if I still love it.

Re: When should a bride buy her wedding gown?
I know I'm wayy in advance but I just put $ down on my gown in the first store I went to...it was just gorgeous and the price is likely to go up. So if you find something you like, get it early to lock in the price. my wedding is not until Jan 2011 but I fell in love with it. Plus I only come home every 6 months so i did it early.

Re: When should a bride buy her wedding gown?
I would start looking about 15 months out but don't order it unless you LOVE it and it will take a year to get in. They also come out with new styles periodically so you don't want to miss out on other options.
I bought my dress more than a year in advance and I would have liked a little more time to look in hindsight. It's nice to be the bride and try on a million gowns and feel like a supermodel and I didn't really get that experience. In the end, it was the perfect dress for me so that was good news.
