When someone invites you out for a drink...

When someone invites you out for a drink...

just socially, and not necessarily someone of the opposite sex - do you make an excuse or do you go?

I've had a really hard time making friends here and I've just decided to do something about it. On several occasions now, I've invited people (just so happens other girls) out for a drink, and I've been turned down with such lame excuses. I'm not sure if it's a cultural thing or what, but it's really starting to depress me!!

I'm a lush and if someone says drinks, I go.
Seriously, I'll say no if it's a Tuesday. But I wouldn't say no to a Thursday or Friday afterwork thing.

I find that I get some resistance...people have busy lives..etc..

I find that the ones with SO/Spouses tend to give the lamest excuses but have the busiest schedules. Those with families have to fun home..etc..

The single people usually have plans with their single friends and like to go to places to meet other singles.

I'm always up for a drink, but I do have after work committments that keep me from being as social as I would like to be.

Keep asking, maybe they're trying to feel you out. Eventually, someone will take you up on your offer.

Hey-I'll go across the pond and meet ya!

Depends on who asks and where they are going - at my old job the receptionist would always ask me and some others to go out for a drink at his old people club - and then get bombed and make out with her old boyfriend. So yes, I would make lame excuses.

I am always up for like Chili's (mudslide and yummy appetizers!)

Well, I asked this one girl who does the same job as me at another venue if she'd like to meet up sometime (to be fair, we've never actually met in person before, but have talked on the phone a few times)...and this is the response I got...

I’d love to meet for a coffee, it’s just always so busy here with a new production every week, and we don’t have a break over the summer. But perhaps we could have a chat on the phone – I’m sure we probably do share the same highs and lows!

Same here on the lush thing, seriously it depends on who it is.

Unless I have really imprtant plans, I'm usually up for it. Provided I don't stay out too late- I am like a little old lady.

How long have you been there? Maybe it's just a matter of time before finding the right people. Heck, I'd LOVE to go to London! That would be one expensive drink.

From your post and screen name, are you British? Is this something that's done more commonly in England?

if it's people who work with you or near you, maybe start with lunch. I think that's a more common, less 'threatening' invite, esp because it doesn't take 'extra' time after the work day.

It's two years already...and it's starting to get to me. I've been noticing a little group of friends forming in my team and needless to say, I'm not a a part of it. I know I should make more of an effort - I think it's just too easy for me to just go home to DH and forget about it - but I'm really missing have a few good girlfriends of my own...

Yes

I just don't think I ever really experienced this in NY - I met up with people in similar jobs as me quite a few times and it was nice to sit and talk about the similarities and differences between our jobs.

Maybe they're not as into networking over here Or just generally being friendly!!!

How about meeting people through your hobbies? Gym? Book clubs, music, knitting?

So how do they make friends/acquaintances there?

My office in London parties like rock stars..I don't think it's cultural..I don't think it's you either..

maybe it's your company..sometimes the culture of the company is like that. I've worked in companies that nobody goes out ever..(that's sukd)

i kind of agree....FH's firm doesn't really do the hang out after hours with one another thing.....EXCEPT for company designated 'happy hours' and functions. at first, he thought they were all rather unfriendly, but quickly realized, they all have their own friends and don't bother with making new ones from the office really.

No one ever goes out for happy hour at my office. My office is very low key. There are only 9 people in our office in NY and they all keep to themselves. There is only one person who is lively, our receptionist.

I invited everyone once and only 3 people came out which is better than noone but still..I don't think I am going to ask again anytime soon..

I'm boring and unless I 'know' you or am comfortable around you, I'll pass.
