which side should face us?? the 'nice' smooth side... or the other 'ugly' side.... TIA or is there no rule at all.....I live next door to my aunt who has that fence up and the smooth side is facing me, she is thinking of having it turned around

If she has a pool the smooth side must face you. If no pool is involved than I still think the smooth side should face you, 'the nice neighbor rule'.

Really? I would be upset if i paid for a fence and had to face the good side towards my neighbor. I wouldn't do it! If they want the smooth side they should put up their own fence.

I thought that the ugly side was supposed to face in, so when you're looking at your house from the front, you see the nice side.

Yes that is how it is suppose to be, especially if you have a pool.

Wheter it's required or not it's the nice thing to do. I think its very rude to face the nice side in at you and make your neighbors look at the ugly side.
Hang flowers, decorate or get a better fence with 2 nice sides but be nice to your neighbors.

Yes, like the other poster said - a lot of towns require the smooth side to face out. It is also done with the smooth side out so people can't climb over it into your backyard.

I agree. I think it's rude to face the ugly side out. I wouldn't do that. One of our neighbors in the back put the bad side towards us and our other neighbor but the nice side towards us. So now we have 1/2 and 1/2.

i know!!! when my aunt said this I was like thinking omg to myself. well then ill just put up a huge pretty white fence around the entire thing, can u imagine??? not to mention the outside would look so stupid!! i said to her i think u have to put the 'nice' side out but she didnt think so, you better believe i will be finding out about that one! thanks guys!

We just inquired about a fence and when talking to the fence guy I asked about this and he said if you have no pool there are no rules (laws). Its just a matter if you want to piss off the people around you.

I am surprised that it doesnt bother anyone that when you pay for a fence you have to get the crappy side???? If that is the case then why bother! I would just wait for my neighbor to do it so she can pay for it and then I would get the good side.
I wouldnt expect my neighbor to pay to put a fence up and give me the better side.... there is defiantely something wrong with that ruling!

I would want the smooth side out, and the crappy side facing me, because if it was the other way around random people can easily climb the fence and come into your yard...plus i think it looks nicer that way from the street...

i would never face the crap side to my neighbor.. but that is just me, if my neighbor did that, we would have back to back fences, and i would make sure they are not a smidge on my side too. i have never seen back to back fences before, that is probably pretty strange looking lol
