When to get ready

When to get ready

My husband and I visited Babies R Us this past weekend just to look around and see what we may need for the baby. I'm only 14weeks but I just wanted to see approximately how much things cost since this is our first child. I'm confused however as to when we should actually start buying stuff. I figured we would purchase stuff a little at a time so as not to get overwhelmed with the expense but everyone's telling me to wait until after the baby shower. But isn't the shower not until close to the delivery date? Wouldn't that be too late to run around purchasing stuff we didn't get? Also I don't want to assume that we'll be getting a lot of the stuff since the furniture seems pretty expensive. I also don't want to assume that someone will be throwing me a baby shower. I have a lot of family and friends around but I'm a little embarrassed to ask if anyone is planning a shower for me. I guess I'm getting a little paranoid with the preparation thing. How did everyone else prepare for such a big event?

Re: When to get ready

I'm 17 weeks, and I go online and look at baby stuff sometimes, but I'm not even going to begin to register or think about buying anything until March the earliest (due in June). We're moving, hopefully in March, so all our $$ is going to the downpayment and moving costs. And, we only have a 1 BR now, so I have no room to store any new stuff. Also, I don't even look very pg yet, so I'm waiting to be in maternity clothes first and then start shopping (I guess it's superstition). Not sure if that helps answer your questions.

Re: When to get ready

I am 22 weeks tomorrow and have yet to buy a thing except maternity clothes which I started buying 2 weeks ago.

Now that the New Year is here, we are going to start work on the nursery which needs quite a few things done to it - painting, carpet, etc. I figure after that - sometime in Feb. I will probably head over to Babies R Us to register. Thinking that maybe later this month I will look at cribs since I hear that stuff can take a little longer to ship if you buy at a specialty store.

I don't feel very rushed, but I'm afraid all of a sudden it will be April and the baby is due in May and I will have NOTHING!!

Don't worry girls, it will all fall together, I promise. and when you have that baby in your arms, WHO CARES if the room isnt painted yet or if the rug doesnt match the bedding, LOL!!

Maria, does your family usually throw showers? Did you have a bridal shower ? I think you can get a hunch depending on what your family usually does with everyone for babies/weddings.

I started shopping for a crib at about 7months. and it was shipped in 4 weeks.
The timing of shopping really depends:
Are you using a bassinet ? If so, you wont really NEED a crib till the child is 3months old! and as forthe nursery, I didnt want to do my son's nursery until he was born, so it didnt have to be a 'neutral' room. Now he has a little boys room ! (He's 3months this week, and his crib should be done this week!)
The things you will need most (and you can even buy these or have someone run out for you at the last minute! but lemme tell you, you will be running around, i think its the excitement, but i was driving around and shopping even past my due date!)
*onesies - I personally HATE the ones that are just undershirts (with no snaps on the bottoms) they say to get those so that the umb cord has room to breathe, and yes its more comfy for the baby. BUT you get them at the hospital, and those should be plenty of the undershirt kind. I had purchased about 6, and I never used thembecause my son's cord came off at the hospital ! (Very rarely happens so soon!)
So have these items:
*Onesies (at least ten, they poop ALL DAY for the first 4-6weeks)
*Newborn diapers (LOTS ! you will change 6-8 diapers a day, almost all POOPS!) and some will be 3 hours apart, and some half hour ! Just dont but TOO MANY, because your baby will grow out of them before you know it!)
*Bassinet sheets (about 3), blankets (2?)
*Carseat/stroller
*Lots of stretchies/coveralls (outfits, whatever the word if for them) In the beginning the diaper change may turn into a head-to-toe change ! LOL. Those NEVER end !
Again, not too many in newborn size. I would say you need no more than 10. HE/she will outgrow them quickly AND they shrink a little in the wash.
*DREFT baby detergent if you plan to wash baby's clothes separately.
*Formula (even if youplan to breastfeed, keepthose free formula cans on hand, BFing can be tough (thats another post alotogether!) so you may need a feeding here and there of formula...
*Baby wash cloths - you'll need them for the bath, and for the spit-ups.
*Bibs (again, not too many tiny ones.)

Thats all i can think of for now...

Re: When to get ready

Anna, your post was SO helpful!! It reminded me of a book I saw yesterday at the bookstore 'Girlfriends Guide to Baby Stuff', same author of 'Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy'. I'm going to buy it next time I see it. She goes into detail of what we'll need, what is okay to borrow, what you dont' need, etc.

And the best advice, is, I beleive Claud mentioned it on another post, dont take tags off of all the clothing gifts you receive. I guarantee you will NOT utilize even half of it! This way you can return it for bigger sizes. People tend to give SMALL SIZES at showers. I sorted all my son's clothing, and it was about 60% in newborn sizes! thank God I returned for bigger sizes or store credit. He has outgrown alot of stuff...

anther good book is BABY BARGAINS, local libraries have it... GREAT BOOK.

Re: When to get ready

Thanks to everyone that replied. I'm just really excited about the coming event and can't wait to start preparing for it. It's just like when we first got engaged and all I wanted to do was look through bridal magazines and shops even though the date hadn't even been set. Also, I currently went back to school full time and I'm worried that once school begins I won't have the time to really go out and prepare. Thanks again for just listening to me...

Re: When to get ready

I am a bit old-school about this stuff. I wouldn't buy anything 'baby' at 14 weeks, other than parenting books or name books or a scrapbook type thing. I would wait until I was much further along to start shopping. And you will probably have a shower so don't buy everything yourself.

I wouldn't buy anything at 14 weeks either except maybe some books. You will get a lot at the baby shower.

Re: When to get ready

I'm almost 26 weeks and I JUST registered. I have not bought anything 'baby' yet...although I am dying to start shopping! We have been looking at cribs and furniture and have just begun to clear out the room that will be the nursery. I am a 'planner'...so even though I'm not due until April, I bet the room will be completely ready by the end of Feb / Beginning of March. You never know if the baby will arrive earlier than expected, JMO.

My best friend (who is Jewish) told me that Jews cannot even have ONE baby-related item in the house prior to the birth...whoa. I would not be able to do that. But I understand the purpose behind it.

Re: When to get ready

It is so much fun having a babby. I love every minute of it. My advice is do not buy anything until after the shower. yrust me it was the hardest thing to do but I did it. I sugest that you have the shower. Of course you have to get the crib and decorate the room but trust me I got 90% of what was on my regestry. The rest pray for gift certificates. It will all come together youll see. Have a great time. P.S babys r us is great much better then bye bye baby. It is so expensive.

Re: When to get ready

I try to always give larger sized clothes at showers. My stepmom told me that most newborns do not wear all the 'fancy' outfits people buy them. They need stretchies really.
My best friend told me a great gift she got was a case of diapers in various sizes. She always had them when she needed them.
Something I always give is Infant Tylenol and Ipacac (sp?). Two things that you should have in your home and people don't think about before they need it. That way if the baby is ever sick, the parents aren't running to CVS in the middle of the night.
Claud also had another good suggestion. Don't stock up on bottles until you know what kind your baby likes to use. The nipples are very different. That is a great hint she gave me (for someday)

Re: When to get ready

Speaking of shower gifts I started giving a set of Child Safety Items to 1st time Moms. You know all those outlet covers, cabinet locks etc. You dont need them until the little one is mobile but at least this way they are on hand when needed.
