When to keep your opinions to your self

When to keep your opinions to your self

Hi Ladies,
I had a rough day. Hope all of you had a better day then me.

A good friend of mine is getting married this August & got engaged on her 1 yr anniversary last June.

I met her throuht her FH, because he is good friends with my FH. She did not get the biggest engagement ring in the world but it is pretty. He did what he could do at the time. For the last few months she has been trying to push him to upgrade her ring. She actually went to a Jeweler to see diamonds & she is even thinking of upgrading the ring on her own.

I said to her what is her rush & to put her self in her guys shoes. Don't you think he feels like what he got you wasn't good enough for you. Don't you think he feels like crap. To top it off she see's nothing wrong with this that if she wants to make improvments to her ring she will just pay for it herself.

I found out but I can't tell her that her FH has been thinking about upgrading the ring to make her happy & I feel like if she keeps this up she will be ruining this for him & for herself. So I told her what if he wants to surprise you & get you an upgrade you will be taking this away from him. She did not get the hint.

I also reminded her how when I used to talk about how I wanted my ring, she would say it's not about the ring or the size all that matters is the love we have for one another. She told me I was being hyprocritical & putting my two sense in. when I reminder her of saying that to me.

I told her I was sorry for upsetting her & that I was only giving her my opinion. We are friends & I felt we are honest with one another & thats all I was doing being honest.

I am trying to give you all the short version of this AIM convo I had today. I should past it but it got a little heated & confussing.

I just know her guy & the way he is & I just feel she should drop it right now they are going to walk down the aisle in a few months & this ring thing is going to cause alot of issues that does not need to be started.

She said she would pay the $5000. that a lose stone she saw coast & my whole argument was you can put that money to better use. like to start a saving to buy a house or condo.

The reason she said I was being a hyprocrit was because when I would talk about how I wanted my ring & she said I gave my FH standards. thats why she would say the ring doesn't matter. Well me & my FH have been together for 7yrs actually on this Monday May 12th & we spoke about getting engaged for a while & he would ask me how I wanted my ring so I would tell him what I thought I liked.

Ladies if I am wrong in this argument be honest with me. I just feel she can't compare my relationship with hers. And from a mans stand point I think she is going to start something for nothing by hurting his ego.
An Engagement ring is meant for a man to give a women or a women to give a man. what ever I just don't think it's right to go & purchase a new bigger diamond to me it's like she wants to show status & show look I have a a bigger & better ring. Doesn't that defeat what she would tell me.

there will always be people like that, honestly, all you can do is take it with a grain of salt. if thats what she wants to do, fine, you can say your peace but if she doesnt agree thats her decision. if she ends up ruining it because she's being stubborn, again, thats her decision.

WOW, I think you did as much as you could without ruining what her FH is wanting to do about the ring. I think in the end she is just going to end up doing whatever she wants to do and not really take any advice into consideration

I have a similar situation going on with someone. I think when friends are engaged someone always thinks they are better than the other and their ring has to be the best. Just girls being catty, what can you really do. Hopefully it will just pass. I know its a sticky situation but theres not much you can really do unforunately.

I don't see anything wrong with what you were trying to say. You were only trying to help and calm her down and she took it to the next level.

Ladies you are all awesome thank you, you all made me feel better about the whole situation. I think I will just leave it alone & see what she does. Hopefully it all blows over soon I am one of her BM & we are going to cancun at the end of June for her Bachelorette Party.

I am Honest sometimes too honest & people can't take it.

Have a great weekend to you all.

I don't think you did anything wrong, you were just trying to help her out as best as you could and at this point, there's nothing else you can do...sometimes you can't help people who don't want to be helped...when it blows up in her face she'll feel stupid for not listening, hopefully they'll be able to move past that issue when it does blow up..if not, then they're probably not even ready for marriage because lots of bigger issues will come up once they are married..

some people do not know how to react to an honest opinion that does not match their own, so they instantly get upset and defensive. she may realize you were only trying to help and she might do something to show she's sorry (though she may not come right out and apologize). and its possible that she wont realize it, and thats her problem. in my opinion, you werent out of line, and really if she thinks you were, thats her problem to deal with, its not like you were rude in anyway, she should respect your opinion.

I 100% agree with this! I don't think your doing anything wrong. Maybe its time to just forget about it and let her waste her money...as jess said, she probably doesnt know how to react and will just keep getting angry and defensive.

Yikes. As someone who has been dating her FH for a long time (closing in on 6 years) I understand that it's easy to feel this way about friends who have been together a shorter amount of time, but everyone goes at their own pace, they are engaged just like you are, and they will actually be married before you.

Be careful... if this is the attitude you are sending out I could understand why she would be upset

Thank you all for your comments on this issue it was really helpful. I was upset at my self the whole weekend. I actually just apologized for the whole thing if I was right or wrong I reallized I should have just kept my opinion to my self on this subject. I love her we have become great friends & I do not want to ruin a friendship because I couldn't keep my big mouth shut on this issue.

She told me it is forgotten & hopefully she meant it.

Thank you all for listening to my drama & I have learned my lesson to keep it to myself.

I feel for your friend. I think its really nice of you not to spoil the surprise that her FH is thinking of upgrading the ring. Why dont you suggest she spend the $ on super expensive wedding bands...this should keep her busy for a while until her FH surprises her. Then you can tell her, 'see? arent you glad you listened to me?'
