I think you give them 6 weeks to RSVP. So 6 weeks before 5/1.

i sent mine out 2 1/2 months before my wedding...it's 2/14 and i sent them december 1st...and i'm still sending!

I'm sending mine the last week in March for a RSVP date of 5/5. So I would also do either the last week in March or first week in April.
