I think you can use it any time, as long as you put the baby facing you at first, then you can put the baby facing outwhen they have better head conrol later on.

As long as your baby is long enough...go for it. My guy was too little at 3.5 weeks (I tried, but his little legs barely poked out of the leg holes)
When I did start to use it I found that charles was unhappy facing me, (I think he felt smushed) but very happy facing out and seeing the world :)
He is 2 months and we have taken him hiking in it a few times...he has good head control, but I do tend to hold my hands lightly on either side (it makes me feel better). Ive found that he actually leans against me rather than away from me...

(I tried to upload a pic from last week, but the resizer hasnt sent it yet....oh well :)

I think the Active carrier is supposed to be used for babies 8 pounds and up (with the extra leg strap). Not sure about the regular one.

I think baby has to be 8 pounds before you should start using it. So once Jack hit that mark he would hang out with me for a lot of time during the day when he was a newborn. It kept us both sane!

I had John in it at about 2 weeks, it was a Godsend, he would sleep and I was free to straighten up the house do laundry etc.
