The pug/beagle mix we are visiting tomorrow is named Shrek, and I just don't like it.

Re: When you adopt a pet....do you
how old is he? If he's young he could probably get used to a new name (at least that's what I think.)

OUr cats had different names, and we changed them.
If you don't like his name, change it.

Re: When you adopt a pet....do you
I read somewhere that it's actually a good thing to change an adopted pet's name. Depending on their background they could view their own call name as negative (if they were always called by the name and punished for instance). Just start saying the new name around them and popping a treat in their mouth, before you know it the dog will be looking at you everytime you say the new name. I've never re-named a dog, but it seems to make sense.

Re: When you adopt a pet....do you
i changed Dharmas name It WAS Maggie. I figured, new life, new name... not to mention Maggie is a VERY popular dog name... I started seguing into Maggie easy though.. I called her 'Maggie Dharma' alot the first couple days, then i swear by the third day she was TOTALLY answering to Dharma! If she didnt then I wouldve left it, but she was fine.

Re: When you adopt a pet....do you
Our current dog we changed her name but she was only 11 weeks old at the time!
My family adopted a dog when she was 3 and we left it! She was a very well taken care of dog but the owners were moving out of state to an apt so they couldnt keep her!
Personally if the dog is under 18 months and you want to change it, I would! If its an older dog I might keep it the same!

he's about 8 months....his b-day is 7/31/04 and his name now is Shrek and I think he answers to it. We are going to see him today to see if Bailey likes him.

Sandy is on her 3rd name. She was a year old when we got her. She responds to Sandy. (her full name is KD Sandy)

We kept our beagle's name (Shiloh) because she responded to it.

I adopted my sheperd mix, Midori when she was a year old... they say you can change their name but it's better to pick something that rhymes with their original name. I could not think of anything that rhymed with Midori - so it stuck.

Re: When you adopt a pet....do you
I'm not for changing the name. I don't have a good reason, just my opinion that isn't really based on anything except a gut feeling.
I did once get a dog named Crystal and I always just called her Chrissy. I made a new variation.
Oscar came with his name and we kept it, even though I always wanted a dachshund named Pretzel.

We didn't change Charlie's name - we thought it was cute and suited him... but he answers to MANY names... Dog, Doofus, Dumb@rse, Bones, Boobis

Change it!! Larry David came with 'Cutie' as his name What a dumb name.
Not that Larry David is exactly the best name either

Re: When you adopt a pet....do you
My first cat was three when I got him and I changed it from Kitty to Mr. Darcy! We named the second cat Fitzpatrick ourselves because he was from a shelter and they didn't know his name.
