When you and a group goes out to eat how do you split the bill?

Original post by 04Bride

So last night 10 girl went out for bachorlette party and we all agreed to pay for the bride so the bill comes and we add tip and split it by 9. It equals 35 each so i count the money and we're shorrt so i say who didnt put in and three people who were there ( all sisters) start itemizing the bill. Well i only had this and she had dessert and blah blah blah... Ok i agree if one person had a soda and didnt eat or if a few people had a bottle of wine and the other ones didnt but this was pretty much a few dollars we are talking. Anyway it annoyed me!

Then we go to a comedy club which is a 2 drink minimum and the bill comes and again they are upset that we splity it evenly but its a 2 drink minimum so they charge you anyway no? Shouldnt that be down the middle?

I ended up putting the extra money which is not a big deal ( its a close freind of moine) but still its teh principlel!!!!

We always split the bill evenly. However, when one of our other friends comes out with us, he sits there and itemizes how much he spent and gives exactly that and he will throw in an extra dollar for a tip. He thinks one dollar per person is a good tip. It is so annoying. We actually got so tired of him being so cheap, that we told him he was cheap and you can't leave a dollar for a tip. He has gotten a lot better as of late!!!

I recently went out to for dinner for my fi grandfathers b-day. place was pretty resonably priced so we figured it would be about $35-40 a couple. you know, for drinks, apptizers and entree. so we paid $40 for both of us...which i even thought was too much to leave considering i had ravoili and fi had something simialiary priced. so a few days later, come to find out, it was $80 f'n dollars a couple. how on earth was it $40 for a plate of ravoli!!!

where was this??? DH and I had a party at Ciao Baby's a few weeks ago - and we split an entree and we still had to pay $44 a person we paid $88 for a bowl of pasta and two sprites!! DH is still pi$$ed about it!!

FW and I ran into this problem on Sunday...

we ordered 3 beers..chicken fingers, fries and sweet potato fries and it cost us $50!!!

some of our friends are just bad at throwing money in.... there is a two-word solution that the FW and I agreed on from now on when we go out with certain friends..

SEPARATE CHECKS!!!

We spilt the bill evenly, it is easier that way.

we always split the bill. my mom was on a trip recently (non-profit organization) and she got a knock on her hotel door at 10:00pm from a man saying that they (she and friend) owe another $2.00 each for dinner. she only has a $5.00 bill which she laughingly handed it over and told him to keep the $1 change.

We split the bill evenly, UNLESS there's a designated driver who has volunteered not to drink. Then s/he pays a little less, since (a) alcohol is often more expensive than the food itself and (b) s/he is making a sacrifice for the rest of us.

its always split evenly... the first couple of times we went out we didnt know this, and our real share for the 2 of us w/tax tip was $45 yet we ended up paying $70, now $25 extra on a $45 bill is alot for 2 college students.....

so next time ordered more food figuring it would balance out with everyones wine bill so we would at least get to enjoy the extra money we had to pay out.... so our real share came to $55, and we ended up paying out $70($15 extra)....... somehow we cant seem to balance it out....

I always split evenly!! it's so ridiculous to itemize... my girlfriends and I used to go and eat with a 'friend'...she would order ONLY a drink and then seriously GRUB off of everyone elses plate!!! and then when the bill came, she wouldn't want to pay for anything more than her drink even if she had helped herself to most of our food. we stopped inviting her along real fast!!

I now believe you gotta go with separate checks sometimes with certain friends. (This would not be applicable for a bachelorette party of course.)

As trivial as it sounds, it's the principle of the thing and in ordinary going out to eat, I think it's the way to go.

I think it depends on the situation - I usually do whatever everyone want to do - if that's splitting it evenly, I'll do that but sometimes it makes me so mad - we went out with a group of people from where we used to work - DH and I each get an entree and a coke (it's 2 for 1 night mind you) and the other people get appitizer, entree, extra salad, drinks, etc. So now, what should have been about $30 comes to $80?!! I didn't say anything, but I it did irritate me. Maybe that makes me cheap, but I kind of think that people should relize when they have added a lot more to the bill, and should offer to put in a little more - if I was the one doing that, I would. And I'm not talking about $2.00 more for an extra soda, but when it becomes a substantial amount, it just seems fair. JMO

Split it evenly.

we split evenly but we also order order pretty evenly - drinks, apps or dessert, entree, etc.

I do believe in letting some one give less if they haven't had the drinks (that's why it's good the bar bill is listed on the back of the check)
