aren't you supposed to drink a couple of glasses of water an hour before? I have a sonogram tonight and when I asked the receptionist if I need to drink water, she said no. I think she is wrong. I'm going to drink anyway just in case.

You need to drink water for sonograms at before and up to the 20 week one. (except the internals I suppose)
The reason is because your uterus is still very low in your abdomen before 20wks and having a full bladder raises it up and out to see things better. At this point the baby is far enough out of your pelvis.

They actually always made me empty my bladder before each sono

Actually, I think it depends on the technician who is doing your sonogram. I never had to drink any water for my sonogram at 8.5 wks or even the 18 wk one...and none at the more recent ones either.

hang on I have the instructions in my bag......... I LL type them
OB SONOGRAM ( UP TO 24 weeks) Immediately drink 32 oz of water. Finish the water one hr prior to the exam. Do not empty bladder until exam is over
For pelvic sono- same as above
FOR 25 WEEKS TO TERM, same as above but only drink 16 oz of water

Sue- My dr. gave me those for my march 16th sono on dr. letterhead so I am sure they are fine hth

I asked the same question. They told me that they used to ask women to go with a full bladder - but now the technology is better and it not necessary to feel uncomfortable with someone poking your stomach!

I was never told this either...my first two sonos were internal but since then they've been external.

This sonogram is for my kidneys. I wish it was to see the baby. I like going for that one better.
