When you write out a check for a wedding gift...

When you write out a check for a wedding gift...

I've always wondered who exactly you should write it out to!

To the bride? The groom? Both? like Mr & Mrs Robert Smith?

How does it work? I've usually done Mr & Mrs and never had problem...but I have a wedding where the bride is not taking his name (I hope she's not peeking ). What do I do in this situation?

Then for FH and I, when we accept these gifts...should we create an account that has our married names prior to the wedding? or is that not possible since I won't be legally changed to his name by then? (we don't even have a joint account yet...so I imagine our joint account will be in our respective names).

TIA!

you usually write it to Mr. Xxxxx OR Ms. Maiden Name (I believe).

This way, either of them can cash it. Or, another way is to make it out to Cash, although I dont recommend doing this just in case the check gets into the wrong hands or gets misplaced.

I always write the check out to the husband's name because his name usually doesn't change and this way if the bride didn't have time to change her name they can cash it faster...

We received checks with my married name, his name and my maiden name, and just to him or me. My bank said that they will cash it no matter what..we both just have to be there and sign our names as it's written on the check (he's not on my account yet). His bank said to bring the marriage certificate and it will be fine when we do go to cash it, even if I have not legally changed my name yet.

You have to change your address to change your bank account name, they need a drivers license to do that. But if it says Mr & Mrs. and you have a joint account already, have him sign it and you guys put it in the account, you will be fine.

Someone posted a thread like this recently so it's not a stupid question. I would just to to Mr. or to the bride's maiden name not Mr. and Mrs. because I know for us that would be problematic since it takes awhile to do the name change and then at our bank I think we'd both have to be present to cash the check.

Man, I'm pretty sure in the past I've done Mr & Mrs. so and so...oops I guess they managed it somehow cuz all checks were cashed!

I used to write it to Mr. and Mrs. XXX thinking it was cute---- but my friend told me a couple of years ago that it caused a problem for her since she didn't change her name right away--- she had to wait until the official license came in & she showed that to the bank and they allowed her to cash it! ugh-- I wish she had told me --I just would have written a new check!

now I just write Cash and in the memo I write their married names and Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!
