North Shore Animal League! I just feel wrong buying a dog, especially when so many need homes.

THIS! I volunteer at NSALA on Sunday mornings! Stop by and see what they have. We have taken in a lot of small breed dogs from puppy mills lately. They are usually adult dogs (between 2 and 5 yrs old) but since you already have a dog, an adult might be better then a puppy. How old is your yorkie?
Feel free to FM me if you want any information.

ADOPT, DON'T SHOP!

my fiance and i looked there for months, but they never had puppies when we went =\

I volunteered there all throughout H.S and our family dog was adopted from there. It is hard to find small breeds, especially puppies, if that's what you're looking for. The puppy we did end up adopting is still kickin at 13 and really sweet.

But there are sooooooooo many rescue organizations that have puppies of all breeds. If you go on petfinder.com and look for the breed you want you will find an organization or shelter that has what you want.

Many rescue organizations bring puppies and dogs up here to the north from the south. Our dog is from New Orleans.

Exactly. It is hard to find puppies since they always get adopted out first. But there are HUGE benefits to adopting an older dog like they usually already trained and fixed! But I understand, I wanted a puppy, too. Best advice, go first thing in the morning on a Saturday, I think that's when they put a lot of puppies out.

Otherwise, definitely check petfinder or search specifically for breed rescues. There's sooo many out there! Good luck!

oh, i already have a dog.

i'm trying to convince my fiance that my dog needs a little brother or sister. if i ever convince him, we will def adopt one =)

Just quoting you because my response was related to yours.

Animal Lovers League in Glen Cove. Always adopt.

If you want a purebred or hybrid (like puggle, etc), a really good time to check out shelters or petfinder.com is February and March. People impulsively buy puppies from malls as gifts and then realize 'wow, this is harder than i thought it would be.'

We got an adult dog and she's lovely; I can't imagine anyone not wanting her.

There are definitely puppies in the shelter. You just have to be patient.

Whatever you do never buy from a pet store. They are horrible. They will try to say that they get their dogs from breeders and not puppy mills but that is a lie. No reputable breeder will have their dogs be sold to just anyone!

DONT SHOP ADOPT

We adopted our dog from the New Rochelle Humane Society. They are great! They include 4 weeks of obedience training with the adoption.

From a friend. Yea.. Happy College Graduation.. 'Here's a puppy!.' Otherwise, I would adopt. My favorite place to adopt from is North Shore Animal League. Make sure your references are available by phone and on standby because I have a feeling that's how I got out of there in an hour while other people waited much longer.

I have a feeling I might get jumped on for saying this but if you fall in love with a puppy at a store, it's still a puppy that deserves a good home. It's not the dog's fault and I don't know what happens to dogs at pet stores that don't get sold but I love my dog and I'm happy he has a good home because he's great and brings us so much joy (as crazy as he is sometimes, but from my understanding it's a pug thing.) All I'm saying is he was born, and whatever the circumstance was, he has a good life now.

That being said I think adopting is great. My childhood dog was from a shelter, he was a 5 year old lab when we got him and he was wonderful. Like I said before I rescued both my cats from the street and I also have brought many more cats to a friend who is a vet and finds homes for animals out of his office. I wish I could have 100 animals but my apartment in Brooklyn isn't equipped for that. I love my Yogi and don't regret having him for a second. I didn't want a pug but FH fell in love with him. We saw countless pugs before Yogi but for some reason he LOVED this dog. I surprised him as we weren't planning on buying a dog (we just liked playing with them) and now I couldn't imagine having a different dog. He deserves every hug and belly rub he gets from us no matter where he comes from, no?

Abigale is adorable. She looks perfect in the snow, like she was born for it.

You know what- you are so right. I always believed in adopting but recently I though this same thing. What happens to these dogs at a pet store if noone buys them? They are still a dog and they deserve as much love and a good family as any other dog (or cat) does.

Re: Where did you buy/find/get your dog from?

I have been doing animal rescue for 7 years and all I can say is ADOPT!!!

I understand what you are saying with the dogs in the petstores and they deserve a good home and it is not their fault that they were breed by bad people. And trust me I feel horrible for them. Unfortunately unless one of two things happen pet stores are going to continue to breed dogs badly which sucks.... Unless there is a law against it or unless people stop buying from them. Unfortunately I do not think there is going to be a law against it so we are left with not buying from them.

I do not want anyone to get me wrong, I am not saying that the animals that you have from a pet store are bad or dont deserve your love or you are a bad person for buying from a pet store. I am just asking everyone to look online about puppy mills and petstores before they go out and buy from a puppy store again.

Ok Ill get off my soap box now....haha

Merry Xmas Everyone!

Re: Where did you buy/find/get your dog from?

my family always gets from a shelter, we walk around in till we find the one.

Kane on the other hand, our baby, actually is froma neighbor by my moms house, he was being treated well and they couldnt keeep him bc the landlord didnt want them to have him, hes a pit and he didnt like the idea of that. so we felt that we were able to give him a better life. so we adopted from the people.

Re: Where did you buy/find/get your dog from?

It is horrible that pits are given such a bad name and discriminated against. They are the best dogs. I do not think I will ever own a dog that is not a pit. They are the most loyal dog that you can own!

btw... I love the name Kane.
